Short video fraud and chaos urgently need to be addressed

2024-03-26

Recently, topics related to short video fraud, such as "TikTok Girl" video series, "Inventory Video", and "Qinling Tunnel Video Series Splicing with 5.5 million likes", have been continuously trending, reflecting the chaos of short video fraud. The author's analysis found that three reasons have led to this chaotic situation being unresolved for a long time, affecting the construction of a clear cyberspace. One reason is that short video creators are driven by interests and do everything they can. In cyberspace, attention equals traffic, and traffic equals benefits. Under the empowerment of technology, the threshold for short video creation has been lowered, and the entry of low thresholds has led to uneven quality of short video creators. Some creators, in order to harvest traffic and obtain high profits, intentionally use technological means to synthesize video content through posing or "grafting", produce and disseminate fake short videos, and even deliberately blur the boundary between "posing videos" and "real records", creating a sense of authenticity and deceiving netizens into paying attention. In the case of Zhang and Chen using AI to create videos, fabricate and intentionally disseminate false information, which was concluded by the People's Court of Shangyu District, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, the two defendants randomly selected online hotspots for profit, copied the titles and keywords of hot news, and used artificial intelligence to synthesize videos or collections of images and texts to publish on a certain online platform for people to browse. The second is that short video audiences are driven by curiosity psychology, which promotes abnormal development. The audience's curiosity psychology, such as seeking novelty, diversity, and peeping, is accurately captured by platform algorithms and sends signals to creators. In order to cater to the audience's psychology, some creators intentionally design ups and downs of plot stories, exaggerated and funny special effects, and emotionally strong expressions to attract attention, stimulate consumer imagination and desires. Therefore, short videos such as vulgar, pornographic, and fake content are frequent, and even popular on the internet. On the contrary, this also squeezes the living space of excellent and elegant works, causing the phenomenon of "bad coins driving out good coins". The reason why fake short videos like "Eating instant noodles for hospitalized mother-in-law" have become popular is that they capture the subtleties of human nature and deliberately exaggerate the conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in interpersonal relationships, in order to harvest traffic. Thirdly, the supervision of short video platforms is limited, and the punishment is mild. Short video production cycles are short, and production quantities are large. Due to technological backwardness and labor shortages, short video platforms face a certain degree of formality in reviewing massive amounts of content. For example, a certain platform implements a dual review system of "technology+manual" for short videos, but algorithmic techniques can only filter out content with high repetition rates, and manual review cannot exhaust all the content. Therefore, it is still difficult to comprehensively and efficiently identify whether the video is fake. In addition, for the misconduct of short video fraud, in addition to having certain harm to society and being subject to administrative penalties or criminal offenses, the platform can take measures such as canceling interactive functions, clearing fans, canceling profit-making permissions, banning speech, and closing. Compared with the high profits brought by fraud, the punishment is too mild. For the fake short video of the Qinling Tunnel, although the information is inconsistent with the facts, it has not reached the level of administrative punishment for fabricating false information. Currently, only the platform has clearly marked the prompt "confirmed as a rumor, please be careful to identify" below the video, and the creator has not been subjected to any punishment. In this regard, the author suggests: firstly, to mention
