Li Jiachao: The minimum wage in Hong Kong needs to balance the protection of workers' rights and economic development

2024-05-01

The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Li Jiachao, stated in a meeting with the media before attending the executive meeting on the 30th that the decision on the minimum wage needs to be balanced. It is necessary to ensure that the reasonable wages of workers are guaranteed, and that the set wages do not prevent the loss of low wage positions, while also ensuring the development of the Hong Kong economy. Li Jiachao stated that the Minimum Wage Committee has submitted a report on the review of the minimum wage, and the SAR government is carefully studying it. The decision will be announced as soon as possible, hoping that it can achieve the goal of simple and understandable methods, as well as uncertainty and predictability in handling the minimum wage. May Day International Labor Day is approaching, and Li Jiachao also paid tribute to all workers in Hong Kong when meeting with the media. He said that the total labor force in Hong Kong exceeds 3.8 million, each of whom contributes to social development. The SAR government attaches great importance to and cares about the welfare of workers, and has made substantial progress in implementing multiple policies to protect workers over the past year. For example, the "Reemployment Allowance Trial Plan" proposed in last year's policy address will be launched on July 15th this year, providing subsidies to middle-aged and elderly people who re-enter the labor market, further releasing potential labor force; The Employee Retraining Bureau also increased the allowance in February; The provision that employees must work at least 18 hours per week for four consecutive weeks in order to be considered a 'continuous employment contract' has also been relaxed. Li Jiachao stated that the SAR government also attaches great importance to the occupational safety and health of workers, and various departments continuously supervise and enforce laws to urge the industry to improve occupational safety awareness and strictly abide by the "occupational safety and health" laws and regulations. Establishing an industrial safety culture requires the participation of different stakeholders from all over society. Employers should provide safe and healthy workspaces, sufficient training, and sound equipment. Employees should also consciously abide by safety regulations. During Labor Day, he will visit and comfort workers to boost their morale. Regarding the activity arrangements during the May Day holiday, Li Jiachao stated that the SAR government has made appropriate arrangements, including increasing public transportation services, ensuring smooth port clearance, and promoting a series of promotions to ensure that passengers have a good experience in Hong Kong. Li Jiachao also hopes that society can adopt a positive attitude towards certain activities or changes in weather conditions. (Lai Xin She)
