After 20 years of joining the league, can V4 continue to work together and move forward

2024-01-24

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the accession of Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and six other Central and Eastern European countries to the European Union, which are members of the Visegrad Group (hereinafter referred to as "V4"). V4 was established in 1991 and is an important regional cooperation organization in the Central and Eastern European region. It has played an important role in strengthening cooperation among member states, promoting regional integration, and ultimately promoting the accession of the four countries to the European Union. After joining the alliance, due to similar historical origins and development characteristics, the four countries continued to maintain cooperation within the organization. In recent years, the four countries have achieved many results in promoting connectivity, ensuring energy supply, and responding to refugee crises, enhancing the overall strength and influence of the region. On July 1st last year, the Czech Republic took over the V4 rotating presidency from Slovakia. At present, the one-year term in the Czech Republic has exceeded half, but the operation of V4 is frequently hindered, and the results are lackluster. Czech Prime Minister Fiara stated on January 15th that the V4 leadership meeting will not bring results. As the host country, the Czech government's pessimistic outlook is regrettable and even more confusing. On January 17th, in Brussels, Belgium, the EU flag fluttered in the snow. Difficulties of the presidency of Xinhua News Agency: after taking over the rotating presidency of Ukraine, the Czech government immediately announced the key areas to be promoted during its term of office, one of which is to focus on the development of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and its impact, continue to provide support to Ukraine, support the Eastern Partnership Plan and the accession of the Western Balkans to the EU. In November 2023, the presidents of the four countries held a meeting in Prague, Czech Republic, and held multiple ministerial level meetings, but the most important meetings of the Prime Minister and Foreign Ministers were delayed. Fiara explained that due to parliamentary elections in Slovakia and Poland in the second half of last year, there was no time to convene the "most important" Prime Minister's meeting. But currently, both countries have new governments, but Fiara still stated that "the prerequisites for convening a meeting are not yet in place.". The so-called "prerequisites" actually mainly refer to the Ukrainian issue. Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the four countries have carried out effective cooperation in accepting Ukrainian refugees, defending Slovak airspace, promoting energy diversification and other aspects, while there are also huge differences on related issues. Poland has always been a staunch supporter of Ukraine. On January 22nd, Polish Prime Minister Tusk visited Ukraine, marking his first bilateral visit since taking office last month. In his meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky, Tusk stated that he will provide a new package of military assistance to Ukraine and provide loans for Ukraine to purchase weapons. Tusk said, "Poland will make every effort to increase Ukraine's chances of winning the war." At last month's EU summit, Hungarian Prime Minister Orban vetoed the EU's 50 billion euro aid plan for Ukraine. It is reported that EU diplomats are currently engaged in intensive negotiations on this matter, attempting to reach a compromise with Hungary and striving to pass this aid plan at the EU Leaders' Special Summit held on February 1st. Fiara also admitted that the convening of the V4 meeting must take into account the progress of negotiations related to the EU summit. According to previous news, the Czech Republic had originally planned to deepen military cooperation among the four countries and discuss providing military assistance to Ukraine during its tenure as the V4 rotating presidency. But at the beginning of the conflict
