2023-08-29

According to a report released by the Chinese Ministry of Defense on the 28th, according to the annual plan and mutual agreement, the "Cooperation 2023" Army Joint Training between China and Singapore will be held in Singapore from the end of August to mid September. This joint training mainly includes courses such as sniper tactics, close combat, parachute landing, and hostage rescue, aiming to strengthen practical cooperation between the two armies and improve the level of practical training for both forces. According to Singapore's Straits Times, this is the first time that the two militaries have resumed this bilateral exercise called "cooperation" after the COVID-19 epidemic. According to a press release released by the Singapore Ministry of Defense on the 28th, the exercise will begin on September 1st and last for 14 days. The focus of the exercise is on urban counter-terrorism. Other projects include live fire shooting with small arms and team cohesion. These interactions can enhance the professional abilities of personnel from both sides and enhance trust and understanding between the two armies. The Ministry of Defense of Singapore stated that the Singapore Armed Forces and the People's Liberation Army of China have held their first bilateral army "cooperation" exercise since 2009, and this year is the fifth. The Singapore Ministry of Defense stated that the 'cooperation' exercise is part of the ongoing bilateral and multilateral exercises between the Singapore Army and foreign armies to strengthen mutual cooperation with other countries. This exercise highlights the close and friendly bilateral defense relationship between Singapore and China. In addition to bilateral and multilateral exercises, the defense agencies of Singapore and China will also interact regularly through high-level exchanges, mutual visits, and port visits. Bloomberg News Agency stated on the 28th that the exercise comes as China seeks to deepen its security relations with Southeast Asian countries, while Washington seeks to strengthen its connectivity among allies and partners in the region. Singapore and China held a joint maritime exercise earlier this year. According to Singapore Asia News, from late April to early May, the Singapore Navy and the People's Liberation Army held maritime cooperation exercises, including helicopter cross landing and search and rescue activities. China and Singapore upgraded their bilateral defense agreement in 2019, including conducting larger scale exercises between the two countries' armies, navies, and air forces.
