How big should the door of university be opened

2023-07-19

Recently, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Wuhan University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University and many other universities resumed their campus appointment visits, and declared that no fees would be charged for campus visits. As soon as the news came out, parents looking forward to taking their children on a summer trip to prestigious schools were filled with joy. Over the past period of time, in order to effectively respond to the impact of the epidemic, a large number of universities in China have cancelled campus visit activities, effectively safeguarding the health rights and interests of teachers and students. With the gradual restoration of social and economic life, there is a good reason for universities to resume campus visits. Many universities have taken a very encouraging step by announcing their decision to "open up" before the start of the summer vacation. Of course, resuming scheduled visits is not an unrestricted process. From the current appointment rules, there are certain quota restrictions for entering the campus for visits, and appointments for visits also need to be made seven days in advance. For parents and children who have a need to visit, it is also necessary to understand the management balance between facing the public and maintaining campus order on campus. For universities, facing the accumulated huge demand for visitors, there will inevitably be a "mountain of pressure". Whether it is possible to scientifically arrange visiting areas, reasonably plan reception capacity, effectively strengthen security control, and avoid risks and hidden dangers caused by management loopholes, for school management departments, even limited openness requires courage and responsibility, and further consideration is needed. The resumption of scheduled visits by well-known universities has sent a very positive signal. Of course, some members of the public expect universities to gradually abolish their "limited openness" and truly "open up" to the public. However, for universities, how to respond reasonably to the public's visit expectations while ensuring good teaching order is the key issue. In fact, 'limited openness' is an upgrade of university campuses from the past' extensive management 'to a more scientific' refined management '. For universities, teaching and educating people is the first priority, and a good teaching order must inevitably be placed in a prominent position in all work. To meet the expectations of the public to "enter the campus, get close to the campus", and even "share the fragrance of books and the classroom", it is necessary to respond with a more pragmatic spirit and scientific campus spatial planning under the above premise. In other words, whether to open up and how to open up may seem like a question of tourism research, but in fact, it involves the balance between the educational function of universities and the social education function. For university administrators, on the basis of the main business of preaching and imparting knowledge, efforts should be made to coordinate and revitalize the school's educational resources, so that the scholarly atmosphere of universities can truly radiate to society and achieve positive interaction between universities and society, which is also the "big" of universities. How to achieve this intelligently requires further consideration from all parties after the resumption of scheduled visits on campus. (Ji Jian) (Liao Xin She)
