The longest carbon dioxide transmission pipeline in China has been put into operation

2023-07-12

The first million ton, 100 km high-pressure and normal temperature dense phase carbon dioxide transmission pipeline in China - "Qilu Petrochemical Shengli Oil Field Million ton CCUS Project" carbon dioxide transmission pipeline was officially put into operation, marking the first time that China has realized long-distance dense phase carbon dioxide pipeline transmission, which is a milestone in promoting the large-scale development of China's CCUS (carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage) whole industry chain. The total length of the pipeline is 109 kilometers, which can transport 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide captured by Qilu Petrochemical production to the underground reservoir of Shengli Oil Field for oil displacement and storage every year. CCUS is one of the key technologies to address global climate change and has received high attention from countries around the world. They have increased their research and development efforts and made progress in areas such as carbon dioxide oil displacement. Shu Huawen, the above project manager and the deputy general manager of Sinopec Shengli Petroleum Administration Co., Ltd., introduced to the reporter of Science and Technology Daily that carbon dioxide Pipeline transport has obvious advantages in terms of transportation scale, cost and social benefits, and is the first choice for realizing large-scale, long-distance and low-cost transportation on land. At present, China's carbon dioxide Pipeline transport is still in its infancy. There are a small number of short distance, small-scale, low pressure gaseous carbon dioxide transportation pipelines, and the transportation mode is still mainly highway transportation of cryogenic tanks. At the beginning of this year, Beijing Institute of Technology released the report "China's CCUS Transport Network Layout Planning and Outlook", which believed that to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, the country needs to build more than 17000 kilometers of carbon dioxide transport pipelines. The operation of the above pipelines will play a demonstration and leading role in China's large-scale carbon dioxide pipeline transportation. It is understood that the project has conquered three core technologies, including flow guarantee, safety control and production operation and maintenance technology based on phase control, and developed two key equipment, namely, liquid phase carbon dioxide pipeline Booster pump and high-efficiency carbon dioxide dense phase injection pump. Compared to oil pipelines, the safety transportation, design and construction, and special measures of carbon dioxide pipelines are more difficult. There is no precedent for high pressure and normal temperature dense phase transmission of carbon dioxide in China. In order to prevent low-temperature damage caused by carbon dioxide leakage, the pipeline needs to be buried 2 meters underground. At the same time, in order to prevent soil frost heave and environmental damage caused by low temperatures, the project chooses a liquid conveying process at room temperature, which requires maintaining sufficient pressure. Therefore, the first domestic set of large displacement Booster pump with independent intellectual property rights was used for this pipeline for the first time, with the pressure up to 12 MPa. The gas pipeline of the same type only needs 0.7 MPa, which is equivalent to an area of 120 kg of weight borne by a fingernail. Since it was announced to be put into production in August 2022, the "Qilu Petrochemical Shengli Oil Field Million Ton CCUS Project" mainly uses tanker transportation to transport carbon dioxide from Qilu Petrochemical to Shengli Oil Field. After the pipeline is put into operation, it can reduce vehicle transportation by 40000 vehicles per year, reduce natural gas used in vehicles by about 2 million cubic meters, significantly reduce road transportation safety risks, transportation costs, and the occupation of road traffic resources along the line, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation process by 4000 tons. "Qilu Petrochemical Shengli Oil Field Million ton CCUS Project" is the largest carbon capture, utilization and storage industry in China
