China's circular economy is booming, and "buying second-hand" has become a trend

2023-06-27

According to the website of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong on June 25th, the attitude of Chinese consumers is changing, and their willingness and demand to purchase second-hand products will remain strong. According to reports, the Everything New Group is the operator of China's largest second-hand electronic product trading platform (iRecycle). A senior executive of the group said that as people cut expenses and promote a circular economy at a time of slowing economic growth, the group hopes to profit from the growing second-hand market. Ji Zixiao, the head of the strategic development department of All Things New Group, said that given the increasing consumer awareness in China, there is still great room for growth in the second-hand market. Therefore, All Things New is seeking to expand "love recycling" to other fields such as clothing and luxury goods, and even sell products made from recycled waste. He said, "Currently, people have a stronger motivation to reuse or trade in old items for new ones." He said that the company has also found that consumers have an increasing demand for more types of second-hand products. During the just concluded 618 Shopping Festival, the company's Consumer electronics discount and discount transactions on its own platform grew by more than 60% year on year, and such transactions on JD doubled. E-commerce giant JD.com holds 33% of the company's shares. The Chinese government has been actively promoting a circular economy to support the country's sustainability goals and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The National Development and Reform Commission of China released a five-year plan in 2021, which prioritizes circular economy and calls for society to recycle and reuse materials to save water and energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the second-hand e-commerce platform "Zhuanzhuan" supported by Tencent and a report issued by Frost&Sullivan in 2021, the scale of China's domestic second-hand consumer market will exceed 1 trillion yuan in 2020, and it is expected to exceed 3 trillion yuan by 2025. The report states that purchasing a second-hand smartphone can reduce carbon emissions by at least 25 kilograms compared to purchasing a new phone. Last month, OneThing announced that its revenue in the first quarter was 2.87 billion yuan, up 30% year on year, and its net profit rose to a record 44.4 million yuan, the third consecutive quarterly profit since the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in June 2021. Ji Zixiao said, "In the long run, consumers' willingness and demand to purchase second-hand products will remain strong." The report stated that consumers' attitudes are changing. Ji Zixiao said that second-hand trading platforms enable consumers to purchase goods at much lower prices, and depreciation and exchange programs help society better utilize idle goods. He said that the company hopes to use its 1935 stores and 2015 self-service recycling facilities in 269 cities in China and its "Love Recycling" platform to provide consumers with one-stop services such as depreciation and replacement of second-hand electronic products, quality inspection, Data migration, personal data deletion and cash return, so as to popularize the concept of circular economy. Last year, New Life expanded its store product recycling category to include second-hand cameras, luxury bags, watches, gold, as well as high-end liquor, shoes, and clothing. The company also cooperates with Nestle, Chinese sporting goods manufacturer Li Ning and other companies to produce Used coffee grounds and plastic bottles for recycling
