Taurine may be the key to animal health and longevity

2023-06-13

According to a new study led by scientists from Columbia University, the lack of Taurine is the driving factor of animal aging. Taurine supplements can slow down the aging process of worms, mice and monkeys, and even extend the healthy life span of middle-aged mice by up to 12%. The study was published in the journal Science on the 8th. The team studied the level of Taurine in the blood of mice, monkeys and humans, and found that the abundance of Taurine decreased significantly with age. They conducted experiments on nearly 250 14 month old female and male mice (about 45 years old in human terms), and fed half of them with Taurine or control solution every day. At the end of the experiment, Taurine increased the average life span of female mice by 12% and that of male mice by 10%. Studies have found that Taurine can also inhibit the age-related weight gain of female mice (even in the "menopause"), increase energy consumption, increase bone mass, improve muscle endurance and strength, reduce depression and anxiety behavior, reduce insulin resistance, and promote the younger immune system. Taurine supplements have similar health effects in middle-aged rhesus monkeys. After six months of daily administration of Taurine supplements, researchers found that Taurine can prevent weight gain, reduce Glucose test#Fasting blood sugar and liver injury markers, increase bone density of spine and legs, and improve the health of the immune system. Although researchers do not know whether Taurine supplements have the same effect on human beings, two experiments conducted at present show that Taurine has certain potential. The first study investigated the relationship between Taurine levels and about 50 health parameters in 12000 European adults aged 60 years and over. In general, people with higher levels of Taurine are healthier. The second study tested whether Taurine levels would respond to interventions known to improve health, such as exercise. Since the level of Taurine will increase after exercise, it may indicate that some health benefits of exercise may also come from the increase of Taurine. Researchers said that Taurine has unique advantages. It can be naturally produced in the human body or naturally obtained in the diet. It has no known toxic effects and can be increased through exercise. (Outlook New Era Network)
