Breakthrough in core technology requires ten years of perseverance

The development of anything must follow its own development laws, and only through quantitative change and accumulation can it achieve a qualitative leap. The breakthrough in core technology is even more so. It requires ten years of perseverance and years of hard work to achieve solid results. It is precisely through more than 30 years of perseverance that China's polar drilling technology has achieved a butterfly transformation from introduction, following, and leading, which is a good proof. The polar region, due to its unique geographical location, natural conditions, and strategic position, is increasingly becoming a new highland for international technological competition. But before the 1990s, China did not have ice core drilling technology and used foreign ice core drilling tools for drilling. In order to get rid of dependence on foreign countries, in 1988, the Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology and Frozen Soil of the Chinese Academy of Sciences established an ice core drill development team, which opened the way for the development of ice core drills in China. On the basis of optimizing the design of American hand swing drills and Japanese electric mechanical drills, China has successfully developed the BZXJ shallow ice core drill, which was completed in the field application at the Tianshan Glacier in 1990. However, shallow ice diamonds cannot meet the requirements of polar scientific research, and higher levels of deep ice diamonds are necessary. During the "Eleventh Five Year Plan" period, the Polar Research Institute of China and Japan jointly developed armored cable type deep ice core drilling tools, which were successfully applied to the DomeA area deep ice core scientific drilling project in China. At present, the drilling has reached 803 meters, opening the way for China's polar scientific drilling technology to become independent. In 2009, I went to St. Petersburg Mining University in Russia and invited Professor Pavel Talalay, an internationally renowned ice and diamond expert, to cooperate with Jilin University in China. Afterwards, we will focus more on deep ice cores, sub ice geology, and sub ice lake drilling technology research. After years of hard work, we have overcome multiple technical challenges such as "difficult drilling at complex ice rock interfaces" and "prone to failure due to reverse torsion of underwater bedrock". We have independently developed a multi-functional drill rod free underwater bedrock coring drill, making China the third country in the world to obtain samples of polar ice cover bedrock and achieving parallel development in this field. In response to the international challenge of obtaining water from Antarctic subglacial lakes without pollution, China has carried out technological research since 2016 and successfully developed a recyclable ice thermal melting detection sampler. In the 2021/2022 Antarctic work season, field experiments were completed at the Dalk Glacier in Antarctica, creating a breakthrough in China's recyclable ice thermal melting detection sampling technology from 0 to 1, surpassing Europe and America, and achieving international leadership. The development process of polar drilling technology in China, from introducing, following, and running together to leading, is a vivid portrayal of "ten years of sharpening a sword"! Strive steadfastly towards the established goals while adhering to them, and constantly achieve breakthroughs in oneself. Especially at the top of the ice sheet, if one's mentality is unstable, it is easy to be eager for success, lose control, and be impatient but not able to achieve it. Therefore, scientific and technological workers, especially young ones, must endure loneliness, with perseverance and the spirit of being the first in the world, work hard in key technological fields and the "bottleneck" problem, and strive to achieve China's scientific and technological autonomy
