'One inch of land, one inch of gold' - The story of young soil researchers and the land

2023-04-25

"I'm so ordinary, why do you interview me?" Before the reporter started, Li Yilin, an associate researcher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Nanjing Institute of Soil Research, first cast doubt. Yes, dealing with land every day seems quite ordinary. Li Yilin may not have realized the importance of herself and her colleagues in the hearts of farmers, nor have she heard the confession of the land she has cultivated - "Dr. Li is omnipotent!" In 2007, Li Yilin went to rural areas in Yingtan, Jiangxi to study the quality of red soil, hoping to grow more and better rice on this sticky and organic soil. Seeing the "expert from the city" descending to the ground, many villagers abandoned their agricultural work and chased after her in the fields. Every inch of land is worth every inch of gold. "Li Yilin, who had just transitioned from a student to an agricultural research worker, felt this when he first went to the fields." From then on, we can no longer live without land, "and began a long and meaningful exploration. Those farmer friends who chased her for over a decade. Not a 'soil expert', but an expert in soil. Soil researchers like Li Yilin treat the vast land as "paper", writing practical, useful, and useful papers on it, and writing their fresh, lively, and powerful youth prose poems. The third national land survey data shows that China's arable land area is less than 2 billion acres, in strong contrast to the vast territory of 9.6 million square kilometers and a population of over 1.4 billion. This group of young people, amidst this strong contrast and countless expectant gaze, are advancing towards the problem, striving to improve the harvest of soil with insufficient fertility, and to "turn over" relatively barren land such as red soil, saline alkali land, and sandy land that people stereotype. They choose to start with the soil itself and find better solutions to ensure food security. Their value is buried in the land, grows in the crops, and overflows on the smiling faces of farmers during harvest. In the words of farmers, this is a "meritorious" cause. Not at all ordinary! In early October 2022, the Jianghan Plain was still scorching with heat. Guo Long, associate professor of the School of Resources and Environment at Huazhong Agricultural University, brought his students to Tianmen, Hubei to conduct soil profile survey and sampling work. Teachers and students took turns to fight, and their clothes got wet and dry, dry and wet. A standard profile with a depth of approximately 1.2 meters requires nearly a day to excavate this small rectangular space. With this profile, Guo Long can analyze the "past life and present life" of the soil in the area. You see, this is a typical tidal soil. Human agricultural production is mainly carried out in a cultivation layer of about 20 centimeters on the surface, and our ancestors have long discovered that this soil is suitable for planting crops such as rice... "Regardless of the type of soil, Guo Long is familiar with it. Mining profile sampling is the first step, and there will be more analysis work in the future. Over the years, Guo Long has traveled throughout most of China to understand the soil distribution in various regions. His data has become an important basis for many scientific research and agricultural production. Graduate students say that Guo Long has a "soil distribution map" in his head, and any profile he has dug will have a coordinate engraved on it. He has a clear understanding of what soil and crops are suitable for growing here. In his eyes, each
