Research: An extraterrestrial terrestrial planet may have a magnetic field

2023-04-10

US researchers recently reported that they have discovered through a special set of radio signals that an Earth like planet 12 light-years away may have a magnetic field. This planet is called "YZb Cetus" and is one of several rocky planets in the red dwarf star "YZ Cetus", slightly smaller than Earth. "YZb Cetus" is very close to the red dwarf star, with a orbital period of 2 days. Red dwarfs are smaller and cooler stars. Researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Bucknell University in the United States published a paper in the British journal Nature Astronomy, saying that they observed two radio signal bursts from "YZ Cetus" using the equipment of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory of the United States. The signal characteristics indicate that they may have been generated by the plasma ejected by this red dwarf passing through the magnetic field of nearby planets. Whether a planet has a magnetic field is an important reference indicator when searching for extraterrestrial life traces. The Earth's magnetic field is an important protective umbrella for life. If it does not exist, high-energy charged particles from the sun will directly bombard the surface, and life may not be born. Previously, it was found that some gas giant outside the solar system have magnetic fields. For small rocky planets, only when they are very close to their stars and the signal of magnetic field interacting with stellar matter is strong enough, can they be easily observed. Researchers say that currently, based on preliminary collected data, it is only speculated that "YZb in the constellation Cetus" may have a magnetic field, and other possibilities cannot be ruled out. Further observation is needed. If it is ultimately confirmed that this planet does indeed have a magnetic field, it will indicate that the theoretical model and analysis methods used by the research team are reliable and can be used to search for other extraterrestrial terrestrial planets with magnetic fields.
