My scientist has discovered a new species of frogs

2023-03-27

Recently, a new frog species was discovered in the Zhoushan Islands, Zhejiang Province. The research team of Professor Jin Yuanting from the School of Life Sciences, China University of Metrology, has made new progress in the research on amphibian diversity and evolution over the past decade. According to the research team, this species is currently only widely distributed in different islands of the Zhoushan Islands in China. The discovery was recently published in the journal Asian Herpetology Research. "With the development of modern biological science and technology to this day, it is actually difficult to discover new species that were not previously recognized, especially new vertebrate species with relatively large individuals such as frogs." Jin Yuanting said that the main reason for discovering this new species is based on the long-term research team's research on the diversity and systematic evolution of frog amphibians and reptiles in the Zhoushan Islands. In the past, some biodiversity surveys based on morphological classification have not adopted the research methods and technical means of molecular systematics, making it difficult to detect this species. However, previous studies using new methods have ignored the relatively remote but ecologically unique Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang. It is understood that this frog and its close relatives have a common English name internationally, known as the rice frog. There are many different nicknames throughout China, such as the banging frog, the black frog, the shrimp frog cub, the mud gadu, the gadu, and the dog dirty pheasant. This new species has been discovered and confirmed on a large scale in the Zhoushan Islands, such as Zhoushanben Island and nearby Daishan Island, Putuo Island, and even more remote small islands such as Shengsi and Dongji. Moreover, this species is hidden in the potential distribution area previously considered as the land frog (F. kawamurai) in Sichuan, and has only recently been discovered through research. "According to the classification and nomenclature rules for considering the territorial origin of the distribution area, the more suitable species for the new species should be named F. zhoushanensis from an academic perspective." The relevant head of the research team said, "The rate of extinction of species on Earth today is 10000 times the historical average, and more than 30% of amphibians are experiencing extinction risks. Unfortunately, many species left us forever before being recognized by human science. Frogs are beneficial friends of humans, and we will continue to carry out ecological and conservation research on this species, hoping that it can permanently survive in the Zhoushan Islands."
