The United States adjusts its military deployment in the Asia-Pacific region

2023-01-20

According to foreign media reports, the US Department of Defense plans to reorganize the US Marine Corps deployed in Okinawa, Japan, and establish a new type of coastal combat regiment. The relevant trends reflect the strategic plan of the US military to strengthen the deployment of the frontier forces in the Asia-Pacific region. The formation of a new coastal combat group reported that the United States plans to establish a U.S. Marine Corps coastal combat group in Okinawa, Japan, by 2025 to quickly respond to the emergency situation in the outlying islands. From the original intention of the design, the Coastal Corps is the product of the strategic transformation promoted by the senior management of the US Marine Corps. The US Marine Corps' "Force Design 2030" declares that the coastal combat regiment will become an important force to meet the competitive needs of major countries and carry out multiple tasks in a complex operational environment. From the perspective of force allocation, a coastal combat group is composed of 1800 to 2000 people, including a command post, a coastal combat team (including 1 infantry battalion and 1 anti-ship missile company) and a logistics battalion. The main equipment includes the joint light tactical vehicle that can launch the "naval strike missile", carry out anti-ship and land attack operations, the MQ-9 "Death" UAV with the ability of integrated detection and combat, the AN/TPS-80 ground air defense radar mainly used for air surveillance, and the light amphibious ship used for power transmission. From the perspective of actual combat deployment, the US Marine Corps plans to set up three coastal combat groups, all of which will be deployed in the Asia-Pacific region. The first coastal combat group was established in March 2022 relying on the 3rd Marine Corps. According to the previous plan of the US military, the US Marine Corps will rely on the 4th Marine Corps and the 12th Marine Corps stationed in Okinawa to form two new coastal combat groups, which will be completed from 2025 to 2026 and 2027 to 2030 respectively. According to the information disclosed this time, the construction of the US Marine Corps Coastal Corps has been significantly accelerated. The United States military claimed that the main task of the Marine Corps Coastal Corps is to seize and control key areas, channels and channels in the coastal areas and strengthen the control of the United States military over the frontier waters. Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun said that the US military set up a coastal combat group in Okinawa to improve its ability to assist in the defense of Japan's outlying islands. The analysis believes that the US military's move has a deeper strategic consideration. On the one hand, we should aim at transformation and development for breakthroughs. David Berger, the commander of the US Marine Corps, once said that in the past 20 years, the US Marine Corps has mainly carried out ground anti-terrorism missions and has lost its amphibious combat capability, which makes it difficult to play a role in the competition of major powers. For this reason, the senior management of the US Marine Corps has repeatedly stressed that the development of amphibious combat forces should highlight the preemptive approach in the way of force development, and achieve the mixed formation of arms in the use of force to reflect the strong initiative, flexibility, aggressiveness and unpredictability. The formation of the Coastal Corps is an important measure for the United States Marine Corps to seek transformation and development. According to the assumption of the US military, the US Marine Corps Coastal Corps will have multiple operational advantages. First of all, the mission is highly mobile and covert, and can be deployed rapidly and dispersedly at key nodes of islands, coastlines and straits. Secondly, the radar and UAV equipped by the regiment can help strengthen the battlefield situation awareness and more accurately locate the battlefield threat. Thirdly, the regiment is equipped with the key points of the US Marine Corps in recent years
