Polish Foreign Ministry: Germany refuses to negotiate on World War II reparations

2023-01-04

On January 3 local time, the Polish Foreign Ministry said that Germany had made a formal response to Poland's previous note on World War II claims, and the German side reiterated that the issue of war compensation had ended. On September 1, 2022, in a report, the Polish government proposed to Germany a compensation claim of 6.2 trillion zlotys (about 9.5 trillion yuan) for the losses caused to Poland by Nazi Germany's invasion and occupation during World War II. On October 3 of the same year, Poland officially sent a diplomatic note to Germany to claim compensation. However, Germany has repeatedly reiterated that the issue of war reparations has ended and has not responded to the note in writing. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued on the 3rd that the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a written reply on December 28, 2022, and the document was sent to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 3rd day. The statement said, "The German government believes that the compensation for World War II losses has ended, and the German government does not intend to negotiate on this matter.".
