Foreign media: Russia Ukraine conflict exacerbates global hunger

2023-01-04

According to the report on the website of Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao on January 3, the persistent global food crisis has become one of the most far-reaching consequences of the Russian Ukrainian conflict, which has led to widespread famine, poverty and premature death. The New York Times reported that the United Nations World Food Programme estimated that more than 345 million people around the world are suffering from or faced with the risk of serious food insecurity, more than double that of 2019. Data shows that from March to November last year, Ukraine exported an average of 3.5 million tons of grain and rapeseed every month, a sharp drop compared with the monthly average of 5 million to 7 million tons before the outbreak of the Russian Ukrainian conflict. According to the report, food prices are rising, especially in the Middle East, North Africa and South America last year, but other regions are not immune. Food shortages and high food prices have caused intense suffering in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Countries ravaged by war, such as Afghanistan and Yemen, are of particular concern. Egypt, Lebanon and other major food importing countries found it difficult to pay their debts and other expenses because of soaring costs. (Outlook New Times)
