After the incident, the police immediately started the working mechanism of homicide investigation, organized forces to go to the scene for investigation, visit and in-depth investigation. Many investigators have been searching for clues for decades, hoping to bring the murderer to justice one day. Since 2022, the public security organs at all levels in Chongqing have focused on the backlog of homicide cases over the years. On August 4, the police obtained key clues in their work, and the case ushered in a significant turnaround. Under the guidance of the Criminal Investigation Detachment of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau and other departments, the Criminal Investigation Detachment of the Yuzhong District Public Security Branch transferred a capable police force, reorganized the special work shift, systematically combed and compared the case volumes and material evidence repeatedly, and peeled away the cocoons layer by layer. Many doubts were broken one by one, and finally locked down the Zhejiang man Zhou Mouming as a major criminal suspect. It is verified that Zhou Mouming is serving his sentence in Changzhou Prison of Jiangsu Province for theft. Later, a transfer and escort team consisting of 11 civilians and auxiliary police drove the special police vehicle day and night to more than 1800 kilometers. After completing the handover procedures with Changzhou Prison, Zhou was successfully escorted back to Chongqing. After interrogation, the suspect confessed to the murder committed in Chongqing 21 years ago. According to Zhou Mouming, he got to know the victim through the marriage advertisement in those years and planned to cheat money in the relationship. Later, the victim was exposed on the spot in his home, killed him in the process of earning money and fled with his property. Zhou Mouming said that over the years, he never dared to use his real identity because of the homicide case, and he could only earn a living by doing odd jobs.
