A Brief Introduction to the 16th International Academic Seminar of the Chinese Association for the Study of Qin and Han History

2022-11-28

Recently, the 16th International Academic Seminar of China Qin Han History Research Association, sponsored by China Qin Han History Research Association and organized by the School of History, Culture and Tourism of Guangxi Normal University and Guangxi History Society, was held in Guilin, Guangxi. More than 200 experts and scholars from universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad participated in the seminar in offline and cloud video conferences. The seminar received 153 papers, which focused on the history and culture of the Qin and Han Dynasties from multiple angles and at a deeper level, reflecting the new progress and new achievements in the study of the history of the Qin and Han Dynasties in the new era. On the whole, this seminar has the following three obvious characteristics: First, it focuses on the combination of macro research and micro analysis. There were many papers in this seminar that gave a good demonstration in the connection of macro research, such as a long-term analysis of the historical evolution of the relationship between state formation and national governance in the pre-qin, qin and han dynasties, a comprehensive investigation of the "system of inheriting the qin dynasty from the han dynasty" from the perspective of archaeology, and a systematic discussion of the turnover of county officials in the qin and han dynasties. Both theoretical analysis and empirical research were emphasized, and macro interpretation and micro analysis were combined, It has played a positive role in promoting the research of Qin and Han history in the new era to a higher and deeper level. Second, pay attention to the comprehensive use of diversified historical materials. In recent years, the trend and characteristics of the research on the history of Qin and Han Dynasties are mainly reflected in the excavation and extensive use of a large number of bamboo slips. In this seminar, the papers published by scholars on the protection and collation of bamboo slips unearthed at the Rabbit Mountain site in Yiyang, the proofreading of the interpretation of the Shiling Certificate Book unearthed in Xupu Han Tomb in Yizheng, Jiangsu, and the discussion on the evolution of ancient paper in the Western Han Dynasty by using the northwest Han bamboo slips are just the reflection of bamboo slips data collation and its role in promoting the study of Qin and Han history and culture. As far as the diversification of the use of historical materials is concerned, many articles use bamboo slips, seals, seals, inscriptions on artifacts, stone inscriptions, stone reliefs (bricks), murals, tombs, sites and other types of historical materials for research. For example, the discussion on the connotation of "baby carriages", in addition to the handed down documents, comprehensively uses unearthed documents such as Hangquan Han bamboo slips and Mawangdui silk books, stone reliefs (bricks), murals and other visual image materials. It can be said that the comprehensive use of diversified historical materials for research is one of the main driving forces for the progress of the study of Qin and Han history. Third, we should focus on using new information to solve major historical problems. A large number of bamboo slips have been unearthed, which not only brought new problems and academic growth points, but also produced fruitful results in sorting, proofreading and research, and provided new materials for solving some major problems involving the understanding of the nature of ancient Chinese society. For example, with the promotion of new materials, many breakthroughs have been made in relevant research on issues that have long been concerned by historians, such as registered residence and taxes and corvees. In this seminar, papers such as the analysis of the service structure of the Han Dynasty and the way to achieve it were carried out by using the slips of the Han Tomb in Tushantun, Qingdao, Shandong Province, and the research on the reform of the medieval financial year centered on the Zoumalou Wu Bamboo Slips reflected the new progress of the academic community in the study of registered residence, taxes and corvees and other systems. Some scholars pointed out the bottleneck of current related research and encouraged more detailed and in-depth research to achieve academic breakthroughs through combing the research on the registered residence system of the Warring States, Qin and Han Dynasties. The above three points may not fully cover all the features of this seminar, but they focus on the research of Qin and Han history in recent years
