Spokesman of the Chinese Embassy in the UK: China firmly opposes and strongly condemns Britain's joint statement on Hong Kong with a few countries

2021-12-21

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the UK said on the 20th that the election of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is purely an internal affair of China and no foreign country has the right to interfere. The British Minister of foreign affairs and development, together with the foreign ministers of the other four countries, criticized this, distorted the facts, maliciously slandered it, grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, and seriously violated the basic norms of international relations. China expressed its firm opposition and strongly condemned it. On December 20, British Foreign Secretary trass, together with the foreign ministers of the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, issued a so-called joint statement, expressing "serious concern" about the results of the Hong Kong Legislative Council election and making irresponsible comments on China's measures to improve Hong Kong's electoral system. In this regard, the spokesman stressed that the election of the seventh Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held on December 19 was the first Legislative Council election since Hong Kong improved its electoral system. The SAR Government overcame the risk of epidemic prevention and control, organized and managed in strict accordance with the law, and the elections were held fairly, fairly and smoothly. Hong Kong got rid of the electoral chaos that has plagued it for many years, bid farewell to the vicious competition torn by confrontation, presented a rationally constructed electoral culture, fully reflected the wide representation, political inclusiveness, balanced participation and fair competition of elections, and formed a successful model of high-quality democracy and substantive democracy, It is of great and far-reaching significance for developing a democratic road in line with the actual situation of Hong Kong. The spokesman said that it must be pointed out that the people of Hong Kong today enjoy far more rights and freedoms in accordance with the law than they did when they were British colonies. The fact that Hong Kong has developed from chaos to rule, from rule to prosperity has fully proved that China's formulation and implementation of Hong Kong's national security law, improvement of Hong Kong's electoral system and implementation of the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong" will only strengthen the construction of the rule of law in Hong Kong, better safeguard the rights and freedoms of the Hong Kong people, expand Hong Kong's balanced and orderly participation in politics and better promote the healthy development of Hong Kong's democratic system, It will only better safeguard Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity. We will unswervingly develop a democratic system in line with the actual situation of Hong Kong under the framework of "one country, two systems". Hong Kong has a bright future for democratic development, and the road to democracy will be wider and wider. The spokesman said that as for the Sino British Joint Declaration, its core meaning is that China resumes the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and does not give the British side any responsibility for Hong Kong after Hong Kong's return. The British side has no sovereignty, governance or supervision over Hong Kong after its return. The Chinese government governs Hong Kong on the basis of the Chinese Constitution and the basic law of Hong Kong, not the Sino British Joint Declaration. No foreign country has the right to interfere in Hong Kong affairs under the pretext of this joint declaration. The Chinese government is unwavering in its determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests and to oppose any interference by external forces in Hong Kong's affairs. Any attempt to disrupt Hong Kong and use Hong Kong to contain China will never succeed. The spokesman said that China strongly urges Britain and other countries to put off the mask of hypocrisy, recognize the reality and general trend, respect China's sovereignty and reunification, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs in any way.
