The first "National Reading Day" in Hong Kong has been launched

2024-04-23

On April 20th, the "Hong Kong Reading Week" and "2024 Hong Kong Reading+" series of activities opened at the New City Plaza in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. This is a cultural event organized by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to promote reading for all, as the 4.23 World Reading Day and the first "Hong Kong Reading Day" approach. Shenzhen and Hong Kong's "co reading dual cities" have become a bright spot. It is understood that the "2024 Hong Kong Reading+" event will be held from April 10th to May 12th, including 34 exciting activities such as writer lectures, cultural events, large-scale exhibitions, multiple public and campus reading promotions. Among them, Shenzhen's elements are eye-catching, demonstrating the continuous deepening of the "co reading dual cities" between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. At the opening ceremony, Shenzhen writer Yang Liguang had a conversation with the host, explaining that his new work "The Running Shenzhen River" originated from the story of Shenzhen and Hong Kong being connected by mountains and rivers, with a common cultural context. Starting from the history of Shenzhen and Hong Kong 30000 years ago, he wrote the story of a river, two cities, and the encounter between China and the world. The focus exhibition features the "Co reading Twin Cities: Shenzhen Special Zone", showcasing parent-child, science popularization, and urban propaganda books produced by Shenzhen, as well as the "Top 10 Children's Books of the Year" of the 24th Shenzhen Reading Month. The Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Chan Kwok kee, stated in a video speech that Shenzhen has carefully selected books and materials published in mainland China to be exhibited in the Shenzhen section of the Focus Exhibition, which is very thoughtful. The Hong Kong SAR government will continue to make every effort to gather the forces of politics, commerce, and the people to organize more cultural activities of different types and tell the story of Hong Kong culture well. As a global model city for universal reading, Shenzhen's approach to promoting universal reading has attracted attention from Hong Kong. In 2023, the cultural departments and publishing professionals of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government formed a group for the first time to participate in the Shenzhen Reading Month event. The two sides of Shenzhen and Hong Kong released a consensus on "Reading Together in Two Cities" and decided to carry out a series of activities to promote the joint reading of Chinese cultural classics and the transmission of Chinese cultural heritage between the two cities. Cultural experts from both regions recommend excellent books in various fields to readers, forming a recommended book list for Shenzhen and Hong Kong's "Reading Together in Two Cities", guiding readers from both regions to read more and read good books. On April 23rd, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Guangxi, and Hainan will jointly carry out the "Half Hour Reading Together" activity, setting up main reading venues in 7 cities including Hong Kong, Macao, and Shenzhen, inviting citizens to share the joy of reading.
