"Accelerating the Run" of the Hydrogen Energy Industry to Drive the Green and Low Carbon Transformation of Energy

The breakthrough technological achievements of the National Energy Hydrogen Storage and Transportation Innovation Platform continue to emerge, and the pilot project of exempting hydrogen vehicles from highway fees has been launched. Hydrogen energy is a key component of planning and constructing a new energy system, and is one of the important paths to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the "Recommended Catalogue of Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Technology Equipment in the National Industry and Information Technology Field (2024 Edition)", in which a total of 15 hydrogen energy technologies were selected. In response, industry experts stated in an interview with People's Daily that hydrogen, as a bridge between various energy sources, is facing significant development opportunities. In the future, we should focus on key core technologies in the field of hydrogen energy, focus on the development path of the hydrogen energy industry chain, focus on building an industrial innovation support platform, focus on key areas and links of hydrogen energy, accelerate the construction of hydrogen energy comprehensive application demonstration zones, and build an independent, controllable, safe and reliable production supply system. Technological innovation leads the high-quality development of the hydrogen energy industry. Due to its large-scale and long-term application advantages, hydrogen energy is expected to have a potential proportion of 15% to 20% in terminal energy demand, making it suitable as a fuel, raw material, and energy storage method. Currently, breaking through the key technologies of green hydrogen and reducing its costs is the core factor driving the growth of hydrogen energy demand. "In key areas such as hydrogen energy materials and hydrogen energy equipment, China has achieved the development of a series of basic cutting-edge technologies and common key technologies." Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the CAS Member and professor of Tsinghua University, said that the core link of innovation in the hydrogen energy technology chain is the fuel cell/electrolysis device, and the other key is the integration of technology control systems and the progress of centralized hydrogen energy storage technology. Hydrogen energy storage and transportation equipment technology is an important link in the development of the hydrogen energy industry, serving as a bridge connecting supply and demand markets. According to relevant experts, the transportation cost of hydrogen accounts for about 30% of the hydrogen cost, which is a key factor for the large-scale application of the hydrogen energy industry. Especially, heavy transportation and distributed energy supply have become the main growth markets in the early stages of commercial application of hydrogen energy. Ammonia, as an ideal hydrogen storage medium, has considerable potential in solving problems such as high storage and transportation costs, low energy density, and weak intrinsic safety in the development of the hydrogen energy industry. Recently, a new hydrogen storage and transportation model has been developed locally in Fujian. With the support of industry, academia, research and application integration, the "ammonia hydrogen" energy conversion technology has been developed. Last year, the first "ammonia on-site hydrogen production and hydrogenation integrated demonstration station" in China was successfully completed and put into stable operation. According to the relevant person in charge, this technology can complete hydrogen charging for a hydrogen fuel cell bus within ten minutes, allowing it to travel nearly 400 kilometers. It is expected to solve the safety issues of high-density hydrogen storage and transportation, as well as the cost pressure of long-distance transportation. In addition, if the relevant equipment can cover 10% of domestic heavy-duty trucks and ships, it is expected to save about 28 billion yuan in fuel costs annually and reduce carbon emissions by up to 71 million tons. Accelerating the development of cutting-edge emerging hydrogen energy industry has been included in this year's government work report. Industry insiders point out that the innovation of core technologies and equipment in various links of the existing hydrogen energy industry chain, such as electrolytic cells and fuel cells, is crucial for promoting the development and scale of the green hydrogen industry. The two can coexist and accelerate the low-carbon transformation and development of the hydrogen energy industry chain.
