Electronic socks can detect unhealthy walking patterns

2024-04-09

An electronic sock can detect unhealthy walking patterns related to diabetes and poor blood circulation, which is expected to prevent foot ulceration and amputation. This study was first proposed at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Science Conference EHRA 2024, which will benefit many diabetes patients with leg artery occlusion. Researchers from Chungnam National University School of Medicine in Gwangju, South Korea, said that diabetes will affect the way people walk. People with diabetes tend to apply pressure to the metatarsal area of the foot rather than the heel. This walking style can exacerbate foot ulcers, which may lead to infection and result in amputation. Early detection of walking problems using electronic socks will enable patients to correct unhealthy walking habits and prevent serious foot problems. The study used a sock with a sensor to test whether it could distinguish between healthy people and people with diabetes. The study recruited 20 diabetes patients and 20 healthy people. All participants wear electronic socks for 40 seconds while standing and walking to measure heart rate and evaluate pressure distribution on their feet. While wearing socks, participants also underwent electrocardiogram evaluation using a small patch worn on the wrist and a single electrode attached to the chest. Electrocardiogram is the gold standard tool for measuring heart rate in cardiology. Researchers have found that these electronic socks can accurately measure heart rate, which is almost identical to the value of an electrocardiogram. Pressure measurement shows that the socks can accurately identify patients with diabetes and poor blood circulation. (Lai Xin She)
