Has the era of humanoid robots arrived when "robots" have "AI brains"

2024-04-09

After a simple and clear command is given, the robots start moving boxes, carrying small balls, and walking on various terrains... These robots, covered in chips and sensors, share a common feature: they are all robots that mimic human appearance and behavior, with a strong sense of future. Recently, the humanoid robot competition and future industry unveiling, hosted by the China Humanoid Robot Hundred People Association, was held in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone. A total of 116 projects and teams participated, covering the "core foundation", "key products", "public support" and "typical applications" of humanoid robots, including 19 sub sectors including tactile sensors, robotic arms and dexterous hands, and typical applications for industrial manufacturing. Representative enterprises, experts, scholars, and research teams from the field of humanoid robots in China have made appearances with cutting-edge technological solutions and research and development achievements. At the forum held during the competition, Yao Qizhi, winner of Turing Prize and academician of the CAS Member, pointed out the importance of humanoid robots: "To a certain extent, the research and development of humanoid robots can guide the cutting-edge research direction of artificial intelligence, and can promote the development of artificial intelligence research in multimodal aspects to form a unified standard, and then 'integrate it', so that the brain (artificial intelligence) and body (robot) can be combined. There are many specific scenarios and goals in various human-computer interaction 'windows' to promote the research of artificial intelligence." This year's government work report first proposed "artificial intelligence+", which became the key word for almost every expert to speak at the forum. They believe that this means that artificial intelligence will be more widely applied in various fields and deeply integrated with traditional industries to achieve high-quality development. And humanoid robots may be a breakthrough point for "artificial intelligence+". When artificial intelligence is combined with humanoid robots for autonomous driving, smart homes, education and training, retail e-commerce, industrial manufacturing... When artificial intelligence is combined with humanoid robots, the answer may be "1+1>2". "The latest development benefits from the remarkable progress of deep learning technology. With the deepening of deep learning, reinforcement learning, and AI big model theory and technology research, artificial intelligence technology has entered a stage of rapid development. At this stage, some previously difficult problems such as visual recognition, natural language interaction, translation, and complex decision-making have made significant progress through the application of deep learning and reinforcement learning and other technologies." Wang Shuo, researcher of the National Key Laboratory of Multimodal Artificial Intelligence System of the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and head of the Research Department of Intelligent Robot System, told the reporter of China Youth Daily and China Youth Online. According to Wang Shuo's explanation, currently, more work on artificial intelligence focuses on deep neural networks. In the past, people mainly wrote on paper, but now a large amount of text, books, and knowledge have been digitized to form rich data, which lays the foundation for the training of deep neural networks. By combining neural network algorithms with a large amount of computing power, unexpected results can be achieved. Xi Ning, Director of the Institute of Emerging Technologies at the University of Hong Kong, also mentioned that the rapid development of new technologies such as artificial intelligence models provides researchers with new opportunities to address the challenges faced in the development of humanoid robots
