Medical experts develop a new type of nanoenzyme called "ecological gardener", which brings good news to patients with dry eye syndrome

Dry eye is a very common ophthalmic disease, characterized by discomfort symptoms such as dry eyes and eye pain. On the 6th, it was reported that medical experts have developed a super small nano enzyme that can effectively remove excess reactive oxygen species in the eye, accelerate corneal epithelial repair, promote tear secretion, and restore ocular surface homeostasis by simulating related functions. The research achievement achieved by the teams of Huang Jinhai and Zhou Xingtao from the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, in collaboration with Professor Li Guisheng from Shanghai University of Technology, is published in the latest issue of the top international academic journal in materials science, Advanced Functional Materials. It is reported that with the increase in the frequency of electronic products, the incidence rate of dry eye has risen sharply, which has brought great trouble to the life of dry eye patients (such as white-collar workers who have worked on computers for a long time). The ocular surface of dry eye patients is continuously damaged by excessive reactive oxygen species, like a dry and cracked desert. Inspired by the concept of "ecological gardener", the research team has developed a new type of nanoenzyme "ecological gardener" using interdisciplinary and innovative cutting-edge technologies that intersect medical and industrial fields. It washes away the reactive oxygen species that cause damage, carefully irrigates the "soil", nurtures a new "oasis", restores the vitality of the eye surface, and provides new ideas for the intervention of dry eye syndrome. The research team introduced that their Ce MOFs (cerium based metal organic framework) nanoenzymes, with their ultra small particle size advantage, can effectively penetrate eye tissue, enter deep tissues that are difficult to reach by conventional drugs, and fully exert antioxidant effects from the inside out, thereby achieving non-invasive and efficient dry eye treatment, which has important clinical significance and transformation prospects. It is understood that the ophthalmic medical and industrial cross innovation team led by Huang Jinhai and Zhou Xingtao focuses on solving the difficult problems in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of blinding eye diseases. Through cross fusion of cutting-edge technologies in fields such as optoelectromechanical, eyeball biometric imaging, and nano biomaterials, they have successfully broken through the limitations of traditional diagnosis and treatment technologies, innovatively developed efficient cross barrier drug delivery systems, and integrated near-infrared imaging technology to make efforts for a new strategy of integrated diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
