Chinese path to modernization in the Eyes of Foreign Soldiers -- A Model of Mutual Benefit and Cooperation among Developing Countries

2024-03-22

Before Sri Lankan Army Major Emila came to study at the Chinese People's Liberation Army Armored Corps Academy, I had a preliminary understanding of the rapid development of the Chinese economy online. After arriving in Beijing, the convenient transportation network, lively urban life, and rich cultural heritage here allowed me to appreciate the charm of Beijing as a world metropolis. Not long ago, my visits to Guangzhou and Shenzhen gave me a more authentic and three-dimensional understanding of China's high-quality development. As night falls, we climb onto the Guangzhou Tower, China's first sightseeing tower, showcasing the bustling urban river scenery with towering buildings and dazzling lights, showcasing the vitality and vitality of Guangzhou. Looking from the sightseeing cruise ship, the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge, known as one of the "Seven Wonders of the New World," looks like a giant dragon on the sea. According to the cruise broadcast, this bridge has created several world landmarks, including the world's longest sea crossing bridge, the world's longest steel structure bridge, and the world's longest underwater immersed tube tunnel. It has shortened the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai and Macau from about 3 hours to about 45 minutes, greatly facilitating personnel exchanges and economic and trade exchanges among the three regions, and promoting the integrated development of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. China, which has consistently ranked second in the world in terms of economic output, is not only the largest developing country in the world, but also a sincere partner for many developing countries to work together. Many of China's aid projects to Sri Lanka have made positive contributions to our country's economic development and improvement of people's livelihoods, and have also enhanced our capacity for modernization. The Colombo Port City and Hambantota Integrated Development Project have created many employment opportunities; The Lotus TV Tower and Putram Power Station provide reliable guarantees for people's work and life; The construction of the Southern Expressway and Matara International Airport will help us connect the world more conveniently. These projects have also become important witnesses of the friendship between the two countries. Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to welcome and join the "the Belt and Road" initiative. This initiative is a pioneering initiative for China to work together with other countries, especially developing countries, to achieve common development. Currently, more than 150 countries and more than 30 international organizations have participated in it. The joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" has strengthened the connectivity of relevant countries and regions, and achieved mutual benefit and win-win results in the joint construction of countries. Many of my overseas students and classmates have told me about their country and China's joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" project. These projects have effectively promoted the local economic and social development, resulting in a tangible increase in the income of many people. The long-term friendship between Sri Lanka and China is a model of friendly coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries of all sizes. In the face of challenges such as the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Wenchuan earthquake and the COVID-19, the people of the two countries worked together and helped each other. In particular, since the outbreak of Sri Lanka's economic crisis in 2022, China has provided emergency humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka many times, demonstrating the spirit and friendship of solidarity and mutual assistance. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and I hope that China will continue to develop better. I also hope that Sri Lanka and China can have more cooperation on the road to modernization. (Lai Xin She)
