Communication | Encountering Across Time and Space: Dunhuang Restored Costumes Splendid in Paris

2024-03-20

Recently, in an exhibition hall containing Chinese cultural relics at the National Museum of Asian Art in Paris, France, a woman dressed in Tang Dynasty attire walked lightly and slowly, as if crossing the dust of history and walking towards the world today, telling "stories from the past". The Dunhuang Restoration Fashion Exhibition, hosted by Beijing Institute of Fashion, was recently held at the Jimei Museum. Over a hundred Chinese and French guests witnessed a fashion show that transcended time and space. As one of the 25 costumes in the exhibition, the Tang Dynasty costume of this model is a reproduction of the costume of the governor's wife in cave 130 of the flourishing Tang Dynasty in the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang. On March 13th, at the National Museum of Asian Art in Paris, France, models showcased Dunhuang restored costumes. In 2018, the Dunhuang Fashion Culture Research and Innovation Design Center, jointly founded by the Dunhuang Research Institute and Beijing Institute of Fashion and other four institutions, was established, dedicated to in-depth research on Dunhuang fashion culture. Nowadays, with the joint efforts of multiple parties, the clothing of Dunhuang grottoes murals has been revitalized and has taken to the international stage, shining brightly. "This is a touching and elegant runway show that takes us back to ancient China," exclaimed French artist Laurence de Malyaf, a guest exhibitor, who expressed her fascination with the patterns and silk fabrics of traditional Chinese clothing. Pascal Moran, Executive Chairman of the French Federation of Advanced Customization and Fashion, said that this exhibition demonstrates that Chinese culture is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. He said that many young Chinese brands are moving closer to "China-Chic", and "China-Chic" can better help young brands and designers rise. The presence of Chinese fashion in the international community is becoming increasingly strong, and the potential for cooperation in the fashion industry between France and China is enormous. On March 13th, at the National Museum of Asian Art in Paris, France, models showcased Dunhuang restored costumes. Cui Yan, Executive Director of the Dunhuang Fashion Culture Research and Innovation Design Center at Beijing Institute of Fashion, told reporters that Dunhuang culture is a representative of multicultural exchange and integration, and an open and inclusive Dunhuang culture is more likely to resonate with the French, thus attracting them to approach Chinese culture. She hopes to leverage the platform of Paris, the "fashion capital", to provide overseas fashion designers and industry professionals with the opportunity to draw nourishment from Dunhuang fashion culture, nourish their creations, and help enrich and develop the global fashion industry. It is reported that this event is the first "going out" of the Dunhuang Restoration Clothing Exhibition. Janice Linz, the chairman of Jimei Museum, said at the event that the Dunhuang Restoration Fashion Exhibition is also the first time Jimei Museum has held a fashion show inside the museum. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. The Jimei Museum will hold celebrations throughout the year, and projects like the Dunhuang Restoration Clothing Exhibition that showcase Chinese creativity are very meaningful. (Lai Xin She)
