Breaking through the bottleneck of mineral processing technology and achieving efficient utilization of iron ore

Recently, the Gansu Province Strong Science and Technology Action Work Promotion Conference and the Science and Technology (Patent) Award Conference were held. Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Jiuquan Iron and Steel)'s "Key Technology Development and Industrial Application of Suspension Magnetization Roasting of Difficult to Select Iron Oxide Ores" project won the special prize of the Gansu Su Province Science and Technology Progress Award. China has abundant iron ore resources, with difficult to select oxidized iron ore resources accounting for as high as 39.3%. The development of difficult to select oxidized iron ore resources is difficult, which limits the use of iron ore resources by domestic steel enterprises. In response to this issue, Jiuquan Iron and Steel has been focusing on domestic resources and continuously tackling related technologies for difficult to select iron oxide ores for decades, ultimately achieving efficient utilization of iron ore resources. The iron ore used by Jiuquan Iron and Steel to extract iron ore resources comes from the Jingtie Mountain mine in the Qilian Mountains. After the production of the blast furnace at Jiuquan Iron and Steel in 1970, only half of the iron ore extracted from Jingtie Mountain could enter the magnetic separation process. The other half of the screened fine ore cannot be utilized due to the lack of suitable technology and mature equipment, and can only be stacked in the metallurgical plant area. After long-term accumulation, over ten million tons of fine ore formed a mountain. "The pressure of this powder mine made the people of Jiuquan Iron and Steel unable to breathe and straighten their backs, and the enterprise also suffered losses for years." Sun Zhongxin, a former beneficiation engineer at Jiuquan Iron and Steel, recalled that "technical personnel conducted a lot of experimental exploration and research around boiling furnaces, powder vertical furnaces, rotary kilns, slope furnaces, etc., but all ended in failure." In the 1970s, Jiuquan Iron and Steel continuously carried out strong magnetic separation technology research and development. First, they independently designed and manufactured the SHP-1000 Jones type flat ring strong magnetic separator, which made the treatment experiment of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Jingtie Mountain powder ore successful. In order to meet production needs, technical personnel developed the SHP-3200 strong magnetic separator. In 1985, Jiuquan Iron and Steel had six SHP-3200 strong magnetic separators for production. At this point, the fine ore extracted from Jingtie Mountain no longer accumulates, and the previously accumulated fine ore is gradually "digested", enabling Jiuquan Iron and Steel to turn losses into profits. The Jiugang block ore adopts the vertical furnace roasting weak magnetic separation technology. This technology improves the recovery rate of difficult to select iron oxide ore, but results in lower concentrate grade and higher impurity content. In order to further improve the quality of weak magnetic concentrate, the beneficiation technology team analyzed the properties and water quality characteristics of the Jingtie Mountain ore in Jiuquan Iron and Steel Group, and developed the "cation reverse flotation technology", which increased the grade of weak magnetic concentrate by 4 percentage points and significantly reduced the impurity content. Chen Yilin, the project leader of "Research and Industrial Application of Key Technologies for Suspension Magnetization Roasting of Difficult to Select Iron Oxide Ores", said that the application of cation reverse flotation technology has significantly improved the grade of iron concentrate after the roasting of Jiuquan Iron and Steel block ore. However, the metal recovery rate and concentrate quality of fine ore are still at a relatively low level in the industry. "Improving the beneficiation indicators of fine ore and extracting iron ore resources has become the dream of Jiuquan Iron and Steel's beneficiation technicians and our unremitting pursuit," said Chen Yilin. In 2015, Chen Yilin captured the development trend of suspension roasting technology. So he led his team to continuously track, learn, and investigate, and began to explore the suspension magnetization roasting process of iron ore powder. In the same year, Jiuquan Iron and Steel commissioned Northeastern University to conduct systematic suspension magnetization roasting small-scale and pilot tests for Jiuquan Iron and Steel powder ore.
