How was "Super Disc" born? The reporter recently walked into the laboratory of the "Super Disc" research team and interviewed the team leader, Researcher Ruan Hao, and his student Dr. Zhao Miao. They listened to their stories about challenging the bottleneck of diffraction limit theory and achieving breakthroughs after seven years of arduous research. On February 21, the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the birth of the "super disc" with a storage capacity of tens of thousands of times that of ordinary discs and hundreds of times that of ordinary hard disks. According to calculations, a dozen or so "super CDs" can store the entire amount of data in the National Library. "Super CD" is a breakthrough achieved in the research of ultra large capacity and super-resolution 3D optical storage through close cooperation between Shanghai Institute of Optics and Technology and research institutions such as Shanghai University of Technology. On February 22nd, the international academic journal Nature published relevant research results. Over the past 20 years, the research team led by Researcher Ruan Hao has always adhered to the research direction. After 7 years of unremitting efforts to overcome difficulties, the research team of "Super Optical Disc" utilized the internationally pioneered dual beam controlled aggregation induced luminescence super-resolution optical storage technology. For the first time, the limitation of optical diffraction limit was exceeded in both information writing and reading, achieving super-resolution data storage with a point size of 54nm and a track spacing of 70nm. They also completed 100 layers of multi-layer recording, and the equivalent capacity of a single disc reached the Pb level. After accelerated aging testing, the lifespan of the optical disc medium is greater than 40 years. Ruan Hao said that the birth of "super optical discs" only completed the principle and experimental verification of dual beam super-resolution three-dimensional optical storage, and is a breakthrough from "0" to "1". In the future, there is still a long way to go to achieve industrialization. Ruan Hao hopes that in the future, the scientific and industrial communities can reach a new consensus on optical disc storage and make efforts towards the integration of storage and computing: "If everything is optimistic, there is a possibility that 'super optical discs' may meet with users in about 5 years."
