Gathering the Power of Youth to Serve the Revitalization of the Seed Industry - A Report on the Research Team of the National South Breeding Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Yang Shu, Wang Xiaoying, a reporter from Guangming Daily, visited Sanya, Hainan in January, where the sunshine was scorching. By the edge of Yazhou Bay, there are ridges and ditches, and vast fertile fields. Scientific researchers wear sun hats and rubber boots to cultivate them. Another busy year in the south! "Look, this is a cotton field, that is rice, and over there is corn..." Beside the lush green experimental fields, Peng Jun, the director of the National South Breeding Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was filled with pride. Indeed, today's southern culture is somewhat different. "Every autumn and winter, we 'fly' from all over the country, busy until the following spring, and then 'fly' away carrying breeding materials. Some people often compare us to the 'migratory birds' of southern breeding." Peng Jun said, "But do you know that now, in addition to the' migratory bird 'breeding team, there are also many permanent forces added here!" Currently, the National Institute of Southern Breeding of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has introduced wild crop germplasm resources for protection and utilization. " There are 15 research teams for crop phenotype omics research, big data intelligent design and breeding, with a total of more than 200 researchers, including 130 permanent staff. A large-scale white modern building covering an area of nearly 50000 square meters was newly unveiled in the Coconut Breeze Study Room for conducting a physical examination of the crops in the experimental field. This is the officially put into use national southern crop phenotype research facility construction project. What is a phenotype? The waxiness and sweetness of corn, the size and flavor of tomatoes, the color and shape of cotton fibers... All observable traits or characteristics of a crop organism are crop phenotypes. How important is it for breeding? Plant height, stem thickness, grain size... All breeders start their work by observing and identifying the phenotype of a crop in the field. In order to breed better varieties, the older generation of breeders often have to manually observe and study the phenotype of millions of plants in the field over several years, like "looking for a needle in a haystack". Is there a "divine weapon" for quickly and efficiently identifying crop phenotypes? A steel "big guy" with a height of 5.7 meters and a width of 21 meters gave the answer to the reporter in the construction project of the national southern crop phenotype research facility. Spanning across the experimental field, it resembles a small "gantry crane". This large phenotype identification equipment can freely move along the tracks laid around the rice field, making it the most professional and technologically advanced high-throughput plant phenotype platform in China. It is equipped with six different monitoring devices, including LiDAR, hyperspectral camera, thermal infrared camera, RGB camera, etc., which can grasp the full cycle phenotype data of plants from sowing to harvesting at a glance. "Simply put, the platform we have built can perform CT scans and 'physical examinations' on crops in experimental fields according to the needs of the South Breeding and Breeding team." Jin Xiuliang, Chief of the Crop Phenotypic Genomics Research Team at the National South Breeding and Crop Science Research Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, picked up the remote control device to debug the equipment and introduced it to the reporter. Now, he leads the team and has been stationed in Sanya to serve Nanfan. How fast can this physical examination be? For example, to put it aside and count the number of rice ears and grains per acre of rice field, it is necessary to
