Through the implementation of emergency water diversion, the saline tide in the the Pearl River estuary can be effectively suppressed, creating favorable conditions for the downstream areas along the line to extract fresh water, and fully guaranteeing the safety of water supply in Macao, Zhuhai and other places during the Spring Festival. At the same time, improving the navigation efficiency of the Changzhou Water Conservancy Hub in Wuzhou, Guangxi, effectively alleviating the navigation pressure of the "Golden Waterway" of the Xijiang River, and safeguarding the "return home route" of the Spring Festival travel. According to the prediction of relevant departments, on the eve of the Spring Festival in 2024, an astronomical spring tide will appear in the the Pearl River Estuary, of which February 6-7 will be the furthest upstream of the salt boundary and the longest time for the salinity at the water intake to exceed the standard, which may affect the extraction of fresh water in Zhuhai, Zhongshan and other places. At present, the three major reservoirs of Dongjiang Xinfeng River, Fengshuba, and Baipenzhu have an effective storage capacity of 5 billion cubic meters. From 2023 to 2024, the first emergency water transfer of the Pearl River for "salt water pressure and dilution" will start at 20:00 on December 25, 2023, lasting for 10 days; The second emergency water transfer will start from January 20, 2024 and end on January 25, 2024.
