Professional degree graduate education provides strong support for innovative development

Recently, statistics released by the Ministry of Education showed that China has trained over 11 million graduate students, and the number of enrolled graduate students in 2022 reached 3.65 million, ranking second in the world in terms of total scale and becoming a major country in graduate education. In the past decade or so, China's graduate education has continuously improved its disciplinary and professional structure, as well as its talent cultivation structure. More than 800 graduate training units across the country have sent over 600000 doctoral and 6.5 million master's students to society, laying a solid talent foundation for the development of the Party and the country. In this process, professional degree graduate education has rapidly emerged, with the goal of promoting economic and social development, and has provided a large number of advanced professional talents for various industries, becoming an important pillar of China's sustained socio-economic development. Professional degree graduate education began in the 1990s. Initially, China established 10 types of master's degree programs, including Master of Business Administration and Master of Architecture. Since entering the new century, 30 types of master's degree programs have been established, including Master of Public Health and Master of Accounting. At the level of doctoral professional degrees, in the 1990s, clinical medicine doctoral, dental medicine doctoral, veterinary doctoral, and later education doctoral and engineering doctoral professional degrees were established. However, overall, graduate education at that time exhibited a characteristic of academic degree research education as the main body. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, in order to better meet the demand for high-level applied specialized talents in economic and social development, China launched and carried out the corresponding adjustment of engineering professional degree categories in 2018, comprehensively coordinating the training of engineering professional talents. After several years of adjustment, the number of professional degree categories in the "Catalogue of Graduate Education Disciplines" released in 2022 has increased from 47 to 67, which more fully and accurately aligns with economic and social needs and supports the high-quality development of industries. In addition to the increase in categories, there has also been a historic adjustment in the talent cultivation structure of professional degree graduate education. According to relevant data from the Ministry of Education, the total number of professional degree granting points in China has increased from 37.6% of the total degree granting amount 10 years ago to 44.2% now, with the number of doctoral professional degree granting points increasing threefold. In terms of talent cultivation scale, the proportion of professional degree recipients has increased from 32.29% in 2012 to 56.4% in 2022, showing a very rapid development. In addition, the development of professional degree graduate education has contributed to the regional balanced development of graduate education in China, with a significant increase in doctoral professional degree programs in various regions. In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in doctoral programs in provinces and cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shaanxi. Provinces and regions such as Shanxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hainan, Ningxia, and Xinjiang have also achieved a historic leap from scratch in the development of doctoral programs. With the rapid rise of professional degree research education, the overall pattern of research education in China has undergone significant changes, shifting from academic talent cultivation as the main focus to balancing academic and professional talents
