Although I am very tired, I can't fall asleep no matter what; Although I want to go to bed early, I still take the initiative to stay up late; Despite falling asleep, I always wake up at three or four in the morning Whenever night falls, there are always some people who suffer from various sleep problems. Taking melatonin, taking a nap, and getting enough sleep on weekends have also become common ways for people with sleep disorders to combat insomnia and relieve fatigue. Why is it so sleepy but difficult to fall asleep? Does staying up late and waking up late count as staying up late? Is it feasible to take a nap or catch up on weekends if you can't sleep well? Is melatonin really useful? Zhongxin Health interviewed Meng Fanqiang, Deputy Chief Physician and Director of Psychological Testing Department at Beijing Anding Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University. What are the changes in the population with sleep disorders? Doctor: Poor sleep is becoming a health concern for more and more people, as there is a trend towards youthfulness. The Healthy China Action (2019-2030) shows that the average daily sleep time for adults in China is 6.5 hours. According to survey data from the Chinese Sleep Research Association, the incidence of insomnia among Chinese adults is 38.2%. Meng Fanqiang felt that in recent years, the number of patients with sleep disorders who took the initiative to seek medical treatment has gradually increased. In the past, people's attention and awareness of sleep problems were low, but now more and more people realize that insomnia is a disease and choose to seek medical treatment in hospitals. The age composition of patients also varies. According to him, the proportion of young people with sleep disorders, such as middle school students, high school students, and college students, is increasing. Factors such as high academic pressure, fast pace of life, and frequent use of electronic products can all lead to sleep problems. In addition, middle-aged and elderly people, pregnant and postpartum women, patients with chronic diseases, people with long-term excessive fatigue, and those with irregular diets are also more likely to experience sleep problems. Meng Fanqiang introduced that sleep disorders have a wide range of symptoms, with "inability to sleep, inability to wake up, and poor sleep" being their main manifestations. He reminded that besides difficulty falling asleep, falling asleep quickly but often waking up early may also be a sleep disorder, and it is necessary to be alert to whether there are emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Why is it so sleepy but difficult to fall asleep? Doctor: Wrong connection established with bed. In life, many people, even though they are very tired, lie in bed and toss and turn, unable to sleep. Meng Fanqiang said that sometimes the body feels sleepy, but the brain is still somewhat active and has not reached a state where one should sleep yet. It may not be possible to fall asleep immediately, so you can give yourself some more time. He pointed out that excessive stimulation during the day, frequent use of electronic devices before bedtime, and eating too much at night can all make it difficult for people to relax while lying in bed. Additionally, some people tend to focus all their attention on "I need to fall asleep right away", which can actually make it more difficult to fall asleep. Some people like to think about things in bed before going to bed, and excessive thinking is also one of the factors that lead to sleep problems. "People who don't have insomnia will feel very secure when they see the bed, which is a good connection with the bed. However, if they often think about problems in bed, they will unconsciously think about them when lying in bed, which is a wrong and bad connection," Meng Fanqiang said. He suggests that if there are some things that require planning and thinking, it is recommended to do them in a study or other place, and even take some notes. After closing the notebook, these things should be handed over to tomorrow, and do not think in bed. Does staying up late and waking up late count as staying up late? Doctor: It depends on the duration of sleep and whether it is regular
