The opening ceremony of the 2024 Legal Year in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was held on the 22nd at the Hong Kong City Hall. Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Zhang Juneng, delivered a speech stating that maintaining the common law system in Hong Kong has clear advantages and benefits. The Hong Kong judiciary attaches great importance to preventing, stopping, and punishing acts and activities that endanger national security in accordance with the law. Zhang Juneng said that the common law system has been in use in Hong Kong for over 180 years and is a legal system that Hong Kong citizens are familiar with and trust. It is also a system that many international business partners and investors in Hong Kong are quite familiar with. Zhang Juneng stated that according to Hong Kong's National Security Law, judicial institutions have the responsibility to prevent, stop, and punish acts and activities that endanger national security in accordance with the law. The judicial system attaches great importance to this responsibility, and Hong Kong courts and judges will continue to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities, conducting justice impartially and effectively with a spirit of fearlessness, impartiality, selflessness, and non deception. The Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Carrie Lam, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony that the future of Hong Kong depends on the comprehensive and accurate implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy. One of the unique and irreplaceable characteristics of Hong Kong is undoubtedly its internationally renowned common law system with strong international elements. Lin Dingguo stated that without security and stability, prosperity cannot be discussed. The judicial institutions bear the constitutional responsibility of effectively preventing, stopping, and punishing acts and activities that endanger national security.
