Chinese Ambassador to the United States: China US Relations Respond to History, Responsible to the People, and Responsible to the World

2024-01-19

On the evening of the 16th local time, the Chinese Embassy in the United States held a commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States and a New Year reception. Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, delivered a speech at the event, calling on both China and the United States to take responsibility for history, the people, and the world, and to promote the continuation and opening up of bilateral relations. Xie Feng said that the past 45 years have been a period of trials and tribulations in China US relations, as well as 45 years of benefits for both countries and the world. The historical experience contained in China US relations should be carefully learned. Firstly, it is not feasible for China and the United States to maintain diplomatic relations. Dialogue, cooperation, and mutual benefit are the goal directions. Secondly, it is unrealistic to transform the other party, and mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences are the basic prerequisites. Thirdly, no one can afford conflicts and confrontations, and peaceful coexistence and controlling differences are the bottom line principles. Xie Feng pointed out that the yesterday of China US relations has become a vibrant chapter in international relations, and the tomorrow of China US relations needs to be further written by the people of both countries. One is to take responsibility for history and grasp the correct direction of China US relations. The top priority is to follow up and implement the important consensus of the San Francisco meeting between the two heads of state. We must also learn from historical lessons and be vigilant against the iron curtain of the Cold War falling again, the resurrection of McCarthyism, and the tragedy of Oppenheimer repeating itself. The second is to be responsible to the people, do more good deeds that benefit the people, and further solve cultural exchange barriers such as difficulties in air tickets, visas, and entry. The third is to be responsible to the world, provide more stability and certainty, and strengthen communication and cooperation in response to global challenges such as the Israeli Palestinian conflict, the Ukrainian crisis, climate change, and artificial intelligence. Kangda, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs of the State Department of the United States, read out the congratulatory speech of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. Antony Blinken said in his congratulatory speech that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1979, the US China relationship has become the most important bilateral relationship in the world. Over the past year, through joint efforts by both sides, the two countries have resumed high-level exchanges, maintained smooth communication channels, reduced misunderstandings and misjudgments, and made substantial progress on issues related to the interests of both countries and the world's people. Kanda stated that the US is willing to work together with China to continue responsible management of US China relations, maintain high-level exchanges, promote the implementation of the important consensus of the San Francisco meeting between the two heads of state, and benefit the people of both countries and the world. Lawrence, President of the National Committee on US China Relations, and Allen, President of the National Committee on US China Trade, respectively reviewed the process of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries in their speeches. Former US ambassadors to China, Rui Xiaojian, Prich, Reid, Huntsman, Gary Locke, Baucus, and Branstad, delivered speeches respectively, offering warm congratulations on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States and wishing the Chinese people a happy new year. At the reception, the on-site guests also enjoyed a concert dedicated by Chinese and American artists and watched a themed video titled "Exploring the Correct Way for China and the United States to Get Along Through Wind and Rain". More than 700 people from various sectors of China and the United States attended the reception, including Director of the National Narcotics Policy Office at the White House, Gupta, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Lago, Senior Director of China Affairs at the White House National Security Council, Beslan, former Secretary of Commerce Gutierrez, former Trade Representative Sears, ambassadors of relevant countries to the United States, overseas Chinese in the United States, and representatives of Chinese funded institutions.
