Escort You - Written on the 15th Anniversary of the Chinese Navy's Escort to the Gulf of Aden and Somalia

2023-12-27

"I am from the Chinese Navy Escort Fleet. If you need help, please call me on Channel 16." This announcement, broadcast in both Chinese and English, has been echoing in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters for 15 years. On December 26, 2008, the Chinese Navy sent its first escort fleet to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters. Over the past 15 years, the Chinese Navy has continuously dispatched 45 escort fleets, more than 150 secondary vessels, and more than 35000 officers and soldiers to carry out escort missions. It has safely escorted more than 1600 batches of 7200 Chinese and foreign vessels, including 12 World Food Programme vessels. To the north of Socotra Island and at the southern entrance of the Mand Strait, it is the convergence point of Chinese naval escort vessels and protected vessels, with a distance of several hundred nautical miles between them. For many years, the escort fleet of the Chinese Navy has mainly sailed continuously and traveled day and night between these two points, providing escort for domestic and foreign ships. The 44th batch of escort missions was the fifth escort mission participated by Captain Ma Liang of the Jingzhou ship. When he first carried out escort missions in 2009, pirates in the Gulf of Aden appeared almost a few times a month. Nowadays, commercial ships traveling in the Gulf of Aden are still busy, but pirates are becoming increasingly rare. In recent years, the sea areas, target objects, and attack methods of pirate activities have been constantly changing, and the naval escort fleet has continuously improved and innovated its escort organization and command mode. The escort area continues to expand. Each fleet will extend the escort area by hundreds or even thousands of nautical miles based on the meteorological characteristics of the sea area and the situation of piracy activities, to ensure the safety of the protected ships. In June 2009, Mount Huangshan Ship, the second group of convoy formation, escorted ships into the Mande Strait for the first time and successfully repelled pirate ships. In May 2017, the 26th escort fleet of Yangzhou ships dispatched special operations personnel to provide onboard escort for the Chinese ocean research ship "Xiangyanghong 10" to conduct marine scientific investigations in the northwest Indian Ocean region. The escort mode is constantly innovating. From accompanying escort, relay escort, regional escort, and extended escort, to interception of external threats by ships, verification and evacuation of small boats, helicopter aerial deterrence, and military rescue by special operations personnel, and then to integrated coordination of ships, boats, and aircraft, flexible and innovative methods are used to optimize the efficiency of force utilization based on different characteristics of force utilization. The escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters has become a major military practice since the establishment of the People's Navy, which has maintained national strategic interests, fulfilled major country responsibilities and obligations overseas, with the longest normal deployment time, the most deployed troops, and the widest range of activities. Looking through the escort records of these years, it can be found that the tasks of escort fleets are diverse. In addition to escort, they also regularly conduct joint exercises with foreign navies, exchange officers for observation on board, and conduct joint escort, anti piracy, and international humanitarian rescue exercises with escort vessels from dozens of countries. Since the third batch of escort formations and the Russian Navy launched the "Peace Blue Shield 2009" joint exercise, the Chinese Navy has taken escort as an opportunity to gradually establish a new mechanism for organizing friendly visits and participating in Sino foreign joint exercises with escort vessels, and actively exchanges and cooperates with foreign forces. Many ships have participated in escort, visits, and joint exercises more than once. Escort opened a window, showcasing to the world that the Chinese Navy is a peaceful force. In the spring of 2011, the 7th escort fleet of Xuzhou ships successfully completed the evacuation of my personnel in Libya
