Independently designed and built! China's first ocean drilling vessel conducted sea trials in Nansha, Guangzhou

2023-12-19

On December 18th, China's first independently designed and built ocean drilling vessel was officially named "Dream" and launched for sea trials in Nansha, Guangzhou. This move marks a crucial step in the construction of China's deep-sea exploration capabilities and modernization of equipment. The China Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources and more than 150 participating research and construction units have completed multiple international pioneering designs. The construction of the ocean drilling vessel began on November 30, 2021, and the main hull of the vessel was connected on December 18, 2022. On December 18, 2023, it was officially named "Dream" and put into trial operation. It is expected to be fully completed by 2024. After completion, "Dream" will mainly undertake national major scientific and technological projects and international ocean scientific drilling tasks. The "Dream" vessel is designed and built by China Shipbuilding Corporation, with a total tonnage of approximately 33000 tons, a total length of 179.8 meters, a width of 32.8 meters, a range of 15000 nautical miles, and a self-sustaining capacity of 120 days. Its stability and structural strength are designed according to the safety requirements of typhoon sea conditions of level 16, and it has the ability to operate in unlimited navigation areas in global waters and drilling capabilities of 11000 meters in sea areas. Following the design and construction philosophy of "small tonnage, multifunctional, and modular", the "Dream" vessel has broken through more than ten key technologies, completed multiple international pioneering designs, and overall equipment and comprehensive operational capabilities are at the forefront of the world. The ship has the world's most advanced drilling system, among which the deep-water non riser mud circulation system (RMR) is independently developed by China. Currently, it has achieved a breakthrough from 0 to 1 in the research and development of 400 meter RMR. The ship is equipped with the world's largest, most comprehensive, and best process shipborne laboratory, with a total area of over 3000 square meters, covering nine major laboratories: basic geology, paleomagnetism, inorganic geochemistry, organic geochemistry, microbiology, marine science, natural gas hydrates, geophysics, and drilling technology. It is equipped with world-class magnetic shielding rooms, ultra clean experimental rooms, and the world's first shipborne rock core automatic transmission and storage system, Can meet the requirements of interdisciplinary research in the marine field. The "Dream" ship also has the world's largest and most advanced comprehensive information system for scientific research vessels, consisting of nine subsystems: elastic network, cloud data service, comprehensive scheduling, operation monitoring, and laboratory management. It adopts key technologies such as hyper fusion, cloud service, data center, and digital twin, covering over 20000 monitoring points throughout the ship, and can achieve full process monitoring of drilling and mining operations and intelligent collaboration of scientific experiments. The main objective of this sea trial is to verify the functionality of the power system. The "Dream" is equipped with the latest generation of 30 MW closed-loop power station, which is the first time in the world to simultaneously apply energy storage technology and closed-loop power grid to the DP-3 power positioning system. The ship's economy and reliability have been greatly improved, saving energy consumption by more than 15%. It is understood that all the drilling support ships, docks, and core storage facilities supporting the construction of a maritime power have been put into use. As the first scientific research ship transformed from a marine factory ship in China, the drilling support ship "Marine Geology II" has the ability to carry out global navigation operations with the "Dream", and can also independently carry out marine engineering operations and marine scientific research. It has completed many important tasks such as the sea trial of China's first marine floating thermal energy device, and has worked at sea for nearly 500 days. South Dock, North Yard
