The successful launch of Egypt II satellite marks a new chapter in China Egypt space cooperation

2023-12-05

On December 4th, China successfully launched the Egypt-2 satellite into space using the Long March-2C carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The satellite successfully entered its designated orbit and the launch mission was a complete success, marking Egypt as the first African country with complete satellite assembly and testing capabilities. The Egypt-2 satellite project was officially launched in September 2019, including a small remote sensing satellite, a ground measurement and control station, and a set of ground application systems. It is implemented by the China Academy of Space Technology, a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd. It is a landmark project for deep international cooperation in the field of aerospace high-tech with the support of the Ministry of Commerce, the National Administration for International Development and Cooperation, and the National Space Administration of China. Kong Dejun, Director of the Bureau of International Economic Cooperation Affairs of the Ministry of Commerce of China, said that the Egypt II satellite project was the first international cooperation satellite project in China to adopt the management mode of foreign aid package projects, a landmark achievement of the high-quality joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" between China and Egypt, a vivid practice of promoting the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and fully demonstrated China's style as a great country and the principle of joint consultation, joint construction and sharing. It is reported that the Egypt-2 satellite was assembled and tested at the Egyptian Space City Satellite Assembly and Integration Testing Center, which was built with the assistance of the Chinese government. It is an optical remote sensing small satellite equipped with a high-resolution camera. After delivery in orbit, it will serve Egypt's land and resource utilization, water conservancy, agriculture and other fields. Haissem Medhat Akaya, Project Management Manager of the Egyptian Space Agency, stated that the Egypt-2 satellite project has laid a solid foundation for the development of Egypt's aerospace industry, promoted the training of Egyptian aerospace professionals, and helped Egypt become a "leader" in the field of aerospace satellites in Africa and the Middle East. The successful launch of this satellite is not only a milestone in the field of China Egypt space cooperation, but also will serve Egypt's "2030 Vision" in multiple important fields such as agriculture, mineral exploration, and urban planning. During the joint satellite development process, the Chinese side provided comprehensive system level design training and final assembly testing operation training to Egyptian technical personnel, and Egyptian technical personnel deeply participated in the entire process of satellite design, development, and testing. Through the cooperation of the Egypt II satellite project, Egypt's industrial system, including the development of "upstream" satellites, the construction and operation of "midstream" ground facilities, and the processing, sharing, and application of "downstream" satellite data, has been further improved. Gao Greening, Deputy Director of the Earth Observation and Data Center of the National Space Administration of China, said that after the delivery of the Egypt II satellite project, it will drive Egypt's independent satellite development, independent final assembly integration testing, ground measurement and operation control, and satellite data processing and sharing. In the future, China is willing to work together with Egypt to explore cooperation in sharing and exchanging satellite remote sensing data between the two countries, continuously expand the breadth and depth of space cooperation between the two countries, and continuously contribute to the construction of a community with a shared future between China and Egypt in the new era. Egypt is the first country to jointly develop satellites with China under the framework of jointly building the "the Belt and Road". In 2014, China and Egypt signed the Agreement on Cooperation in Space Technology and Remote Sensing Applications, which decided to strengthen cooperation in satellite development, satellite launch, space measurement and control, satellite applications, data sharing, and other fields. In January 2019, China and Egypt signed an agreement to implement the Egypt II satellite
