On December 2, 2023, the parallel seminar of the "Understanding China" International Conference (Guangzhou) with the theme of "Deep Integration of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao: Building a world-class bay area" was held in Guangzhou. This is also the first time in the "Understanding China" series of conferences to hold a special seminar on cooperation in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. The conference was chaired by Huang Ping, Executive Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hong Kong and Director of the Taiwan Hong Kong Macao Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, as a joint cooperation area between the Chinese Mainland and the two special administrative regions, is also gradually emerging its potential in the economic and technological fields. As one of the most dynamic and promising urban agglomerations in the world, the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is expected to become an important growth pole for global economic development and a leader in technological change. Tan Yaozong, Vice President of the National Association for Hong Kong and Macao Studies and former Standing Committee Member of the National People's Congress, interpreted Hong Kong's contributions to national development in the new era from six aspects during the meeting. He stated that firstly, we will resolutely maintain national security and create a stable environment for the development of the Greater Bay Area; Secondly, continuously researching and exploring policy connections, and increasing integration into the overall development of the country; Thirdly, leveraging the internationalization characteristics of Hong Kong and assisting the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area to become a leader in industry rules; Fourth, continue to consolidate and develop Hong Kong's position as a financial center; Fifth, deepen youth work and cultivate talents for the construction of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao; Six is to play a good role in connecting Hong Kong with the international community and tell the world a good story about China. He believes that in the future, Hong Kong can leverage its traditional advantages of strengthening its connections with the mainland and the Asia Pacific region, as well as its institutional advantages in tax rates, free currency exchange, and the common law system, to continue to play the role of a financial super liaison and contribute to the deepening of China's reform and opening up.
