Multiple respiratory pathogens overlap, experts advise children on how to cope

2023-12-01

Currently, as winter approaches in various parts of China, respiratory diseases are entering a period of high incidence. Some children may experience multiple respiratory pathogens coexisting with infections. How to respond and prevent? Qiao Xiaohong, Director of Pediatrics at Tongji Hospital affiliated with Tongji University, answered relevant questions. Qiao Xiaohong pointed out that now is a period of active respiratory pathogens, and children's resistance is weak. Some children may return to school for classes before fully recovering from early Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection, and their bodies are still relatively weak. Encountering influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, etc. may once again be a hit. "Therefore, we suggest that children should rest more at home when they first recover and not rush back to school or go to crowded places," said Qiao Xiaohong. "If a child experiences symptoms such as persistent fever and worsening cough, parents should promptly take the child for corresponding pathogen testing." Qiao Xiaohong said that doctors will adopt targeted medication and treatment plans according to the specific situation. "After a child has been infected with Mycoplasma pneumoniae, the antibodies may last for a considerable period of time. If the child no longer has any symptoms, there is no need to repeatedly go to the hospital to test whether the Mycoplasma pneumoniae antibodies have turned negative." Qiao Xiaohong said, "If the child's condition is good in all aspects, there is no need to repeatedly go to the hospital to avoid cross infection." "As the temperature decreases in the future, it is also important to be vigilant about children's severe asthma and other diseases, so it is particularly important to take preventive measures." Qiao Xiaohong suggests that parents should give their children flu vaccines in a timely manner before the flu epidemic each year to reduce the chance of their children being infected with the flu virus or alleviate flu symptoms. Lu Shuanglong, the attending pediatrician at Tongji Hospital, also reminds parents that sometimes prevention is more important than treatment. Frequent washing of hands, wearing masks, and regular ventilation are all effective ways to prevent influenza. In addition, it is also necessary to maintain sufficient sleep, have a reasonable diet, and comprehensively improve personal immunity.
