"Zero Distance" Dialogue between Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Teachers and Students with Astronauts

2023-11-30

The Chinese manned space engineering delegation went to Peiqiao Middle School, Ma Tau Chung Government Primary School, Wang Kam Fai Secondary School and Primary School affiliated with Hong Kong Baptist University this morning (29th), and had face-to-face interaction with about 1400 teachers and students from more than 40 schools. Each sub venue had nearly 3 hours of communication. Engineering system experts and representatives of astronauts vividly introduced the brilliant achievements of China's manned spaceflight engineering to students, popularizing aerospace knowledge in space stations, launch sites, measurement and control communication, and in orbit work and life, encouraging young people to have lofty dreams, set growth goals, and aspire to serve the motherland. At Peiqiao Middle School, Chen Manlin finally realized her desire to meet Chen Dong, the commander of the crew of Shenzhou XIV, a "space pen friend", offline. In June 2022, Chen Manlin participated in the essay competition "Going to the Heavenly Palace with Dreams". One month later, she received a reply from Chen Dong. She said that this reply has inspired her greatly. "There is a sentence in the reply that says' Life is like the sky, because there is sunshine, wind and snow, and thunderstorms, it can become more rich. 'I think this sentence has greatly inspired me, which is to face every challenge and situation with a calm attitude." Chen Manlin said that I was very touched by the meeting with Chen Dong this time. She described Chen Dong as approachable, explaining her experiences and discoveries in the Heavenly Palace to her classmates, which deepened their interest in the universe. During the Q&A session, on-site teachers and students enthusiastically asked questions to the delegation about topics of interest such as aerospace technology, space life, and astronaut training. Experts and astronauts provided vivid and exciting answers one by one. Aerospace experts say that Hong Kong students have a great interest in exploring the mysteries of the universe, a high enthusiasm for participating in the country's aerospace industry, and a strong drive to pursue their aerospace dreams. Being able to have such a face-to-face and in-depth interaction and exchange with Hong Kong children will lay a reserve of talent and a solid foundation for their deep integration into the country's aerospace industry. During the event, the Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Tsai Ruo lien, warmly welcomed and paid tribute to the delegation, and expressed sincere gratitude to the Central People's Government for arranging a delegation to visit Hong Kong. She said that the country's aerospace industry has developed rapidly and has made historic progress in recent years, which is inspiring. Li Meichang, Permanent Secretary General of the Education Bureau, also stated that the SAR government is vigorously promoting STEAM education in primary and secondary schools, including the establishment of primary school science subjects, increasing space science knowledge, cooperating with the national strategy of promoting science and education, and cultivating talents in the field of innovation and science. She encourages Hong Kong students to base themselves in Hong Kong, embrace their motherland, look at the world, gaze into space, bravely pursue their dreams, and contribute to Hong Kong, the country, and human civilization in the future, shining brightly. After the lecture, the student representatives presented their handmade aerospace themed works to the delegation, and the astronauts also presented signed photos of the beautiful scenery of the Earth they took during their "space business trip" to the on-site students. Astronaut Zhang Lu also presented calligraphy works that encourage students to work hard to the school. (Lai Xin She)
