Sports Review: Sports Circularization Should Stop

2023-11-28

Quan Hongchan brushes the screen again! In the women's 10m platform final of the 2023 National Diving Championships, Chen Yuxi won the championship and Quan Hongchan won the runner up. After the game, some spectators questioned the referee on site, and various versions of "black screen" emerged online, triggering heated discussions and boycotts among netizens about the "fandom" of sports. On November 22nd, Quan Hongchan (left) from Guangdong Haiyin team and Chen Yuxi from Shanghai team had a lively conversation after the women's 10m platform final at the National Diving Championships. Xinhua News Agency reporter Xiao Yijiu pointed out that the phenomenon of "fandom" originated in the entertainment industry, and one of its prominent features is that "love for beans" must always be unfavorable. Once the performance of "Ai Dou" does not meet expectations, some people will believe that there must be a "dark curtain", and some irrational voices will instantly become popular. Another prominent feature of "fan circles" is the intrusion of others' privacy. The "fanization" of sports has existed for a long time. Previously, well-known athletes such as Fan Zhendong, Wang Chuqin, and Yang Shuyu had publicly called for a boycott of this phenomenon. This time, as Quan Hongchan's senior brother, diving Olympic champion He Chong also refuted the claim that "Quan Hongchan was overshadowed", stating that "fandom like thinking and words and actions are very frightening.". The popularization of sports and the growth of athletes through fandom is harmful but not beneficial. Firstly, the public's focus has shifted, leading to a decrease in attention to the sports event itself. They only focus on the off-site situation and make unfounded malicious speculations, which is not conducive to the promotion and sustainable development of sports events. Secondly, it causes difficulties for the athletes and related personnel involved, increases their mental burden and psychological pressure, reduces their ability to reflect and learn, and in the long run, it is not conducive to improving their competitive level and promoting healthy competition. The deeper harm is the blow to China's booming sports industry, and the efforts of all sectors of society to create an "open, fair, just" and "ethical, style, and clean" competition environment are ignored. On October 29th, Fan Zhendong competed in the 2023 World Table Tennis Major League (WTT) Frankfurt Championship. It is necessary to put a stop to the trend of "fandom" in sports and create a refreshing public opinion environment for the development of the sports industry. The charm of competitive sports lies in the unpredictable results, and what we strive for is the unwavering quality of never giving up until the last moment. As spectators, each of us has the right to support and love a certain athlete, but this support and love should be rational and have certain boundaries. We should learn to view the performance and wins of athletes rationally. There is no invincible general on the sports field. Athletes constantly learn from their successes and setbacks, and continue to move forward. We hope that athletes can hold onto their original aspirations and maintain a "clear conscience" in the face of complex external comments. In the highly developed era of the Internet, it is difficult for athletes to be deaf to things outside the window. Excessive pursuit and blind criticism from the outside world can easily lead to misconceptions. Some platforms should take timely measures in similar events to prevent the spread and fermentation of related topics, and should not sit on the sidelines and collect traffic dividends. Two years ago, the Chinese Olympic Committee issued a statement calling on all sectors of society to respect the individual rights and interests of athletes and pursue them rationally
