Quantum dot materials are expected to become China's long board industry

2023-10-24

Editor's note: Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council jointly released the first batch of key development guidelines for the industrialization of cutting-edge materials, aiming to accelerate the innovative development of cutting-edge materials industrialization. The new materials industry is a strategic and fundamental industry, and cutting-edge materials represent the direction and trend of the development of the new materials industry, which is an important entry point for building new growth engines. Starting from now on, this edition will launch a series of reports on "Frontier Materials Observation", which will provide in-depth insights into the innovative research directions, industrial development status, and future application prospects of cutting-edge materials. Recently, the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to "quantum dots". French Tunisian American chemist Moungi G. Bawendi, American chemist Louis E. Bruce, and Russian physicist Alexei I. Ekimov won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023 for "discovering and synthesizing quantum dots". Quantum dots are a type of small particles that have been applied in multiple fields. For example, the light transmission of television screens and LED lights is related to quantum dots, which can catalyze chemical reactions and emit light that can also illuminate tumor tissue for surgeons. "China has clearly proposed the development of quantum dot materials in the Guiding Catalogue for Key Development of Frontier Materials Industrialization (the first batch), which is very strategic." Yang Xiaoguang, a researcher at the Institute of Semiconductor Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Science and Technology Daily, China is at a leading international level in scientific research and industry related to quantum dot materials, which can be developed into China's future long board industry. Quantum dots, also known as "artificial atoms", are quasi zero dimensional nanomaterials composed of a small number of atoms, with high luminous efficiency, high color purity, high color gamut, and solution processability. Quantum dot materials specifically include blue phosphorescent materials, silicon based quantum dot frequency comb laser materials, etc., which can be applied in new generation information technology and other fields. Quantum dots, also known as semiconductor nanocrystals, are zero dimensional nanostructures composed of a small number of atoms with three dimensions typically ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers. "Professor Xie Rongjun from the School of Materials at Xiamen University stated that a quantum dot has a small number of electrons, holes, or electron hole pairs, and is also known as an" artificial atom ". Among quantum dot materials, colloidal quantum dot materials are the most widely studied and applied category. Colloidal quantum dot materials are usually prepared by chemical synthesis methods, which involves solidifying the organic or inorganic solution of metals into quantum dots and dispersing them in solvents. Like many significant discoveries that have changed the process of human development, quantum dots have also been discovered by chance. Alexei I. Yekimov discovered the size dependent properties of nanoparticles while studying colored glass in 1980, marking the discovery of quantum dots; In 1983, Louis E. Bruce proposed the quantum size effect on the optical properties of quantum dots after studying cadmium sulfide colloidal solutions; Mengi G. Bawendi proposed the epoch-making "thermal injection method" in 1993, which produced high-quality quantum dots with uniform and adjustable sizes, greatly promoting the development of this field
