China's plan to "charge" Morocco's green and sustainable development

2023-10-20

On October 20 of this year, the important project of the "the Belt and Road" and the first 100 MW solar thermal project contracted by Chinese enterprises overseas - Morocco Nuo Phase III 150 MW solar thermal power plant was put into operation for five full years. This solar thermal power plant is located in the Nuo Solar Power Park in the city of Warzazazat in southeastern Morocco. Since the project was put into operation, it can transmit approximately 530 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity to the Moroccan power grid every year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 230000 tons annually, providing strong support for Morocco's green and sustainable development and ecological environment protection. Morocco lacks local energy resources such as coal and natural gas. Most of its areas are deserts, so it has good light resources. If we use solar photovoltaic or photothermal energy to produce clean electricity, it can help Morocco overcome the long-term power shortage. "Speaking of the project construction background, Fan Tao, who served as the design chief engineer of the Nuo III 150 MW photothermal power plant project in Morocco, said. So, the Nuo III 150 MW photothermal power plant in Morocco emerged. Northwest Research Institute of China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Construction Group, is responsible for the civil design, power generation unit, and overall auxiliary system design of the project. In May 2015, the construction of the Nuo III 150 MW photothermal power plant in Morocco officially began. This photothermal power plant belongs to a large capacity tower type molten salt photothermal power plant. It looks quite sci-fi: the heat absorption tower located in the center of the solar thermal power plant stands tall like a lighthouse; On the ground around the absorption tower, there are thousands of heliostats distributed around them, which reflect sunlight onto the top of the absorption tower. It is reported that the mirror field area of the 150 MW photothermal power plant in Nuo III, Morocco is approximately 1.32 million square meters, and the height of the heat absorption tower is 243 meters. The project uses a total of 7400 heliostats, each consisting of 54 reflective mirror modules, with a heliostat area of 178 square meters. Below the heat absorption tower, there are two molten salt tanks installed, one cold salt tank and one hot salt tank. The molten salt in the tank can maintain a flowing state between 290-565 degrees Celsius, which is an indispensable key link for this photothermal power plant to convert solar energy into electricity. Among them, molten salt with a temperature of 290 degrees Celsius is placed in the cold salt tank. When the heliostat reflects light onto the heat absorbing tower, the molten salt in the cold salt tank is transported to the collector on the heat absorbing tower. Molten salt absorbs heat and gradually heats up. When the temperature approaches 565 degrees Celsius, the molten salt pump will pump them into a hot salt tank for storage. When preparing for power generation, the molten salt in the hot salt tank will be transported to the steam generator to heat the water. Water absorbs heat and generates steam, which drives the operation of the steam turbine unit, thereby generating electricity. After the temperature of the molten salt drops, it is transported back to the cold salt tank again, and so on in a cyclic manner. Before the design was carried out in 2015, domestic design institutes did not have experience in designing large capacity tower type molten salt photothermal power plants, and there were no relevant standards and specifications for tower type photothermal power plants both domestically and internationally. The design team has encountered unprecedented challenges in wind resistance, earthquake resistance, and other aspects. The first thing we face is the issue of wind resistance
