AI Psychological Service Robot: Helping People Self solve Psychological Problems

2023-10-17

In the past six months, Zhou Meiyi, a girl born in the 2000s, has gradually felt that there is something "wrong" with her body. The most obvious symptoms are shallow sleep, easy to wake up early, difficulty sitting and standing, and feeling flustered. Zhou Meiyi went to the sleep department of a nearby hospital for treatment. The doctor diagnosed her with "severe anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder", provided a medication treatment plan, and informed her that these drugs have certain side effects and withdrawal reactions. Zhou Meiyi felt that she "still lacks a sense of security". So she decided to seek help from psychological therapy. I encountered difficulties at the beginning of finding a psychological counselor, "Zhou Meiyi said, and the difficulties were first reflected in choosing a treatment institution. She has learned about some psychological counseling platforms and institutions on the market, but for her who is in a state of unemployment, the consultation fees through these channels are relatively high, and she cannot easily trust them. After multiple inquiries, Zhou Meiyi targeted Beijing's tertiary hospitals. But she found that the authoritative hospital account source was tight, and they were basically in a "no account" state. After several days of "squatting", Zhou Meiyi finally managed to secure the outpatient number a week later. It has been over a month since she first saw the sleep department. Zhou Meiyi believes that while waiting for treatment, anxiety symptoms worsen and even trigger complications. What can AI psychological service robots do? The difficulties encountered by Zhou Meiyi may also be a dilemma faced by many patients with mental disorders. The World Mental Health Report released by the World Health Organization in 2022 shows that nearly 1 billion people worldwide suffer from varying degrees of mental disorders, and there may be one person with mental disorders in every 8 people. After the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, this data growth is particularly prominent. The particularity of psychological counseling requires physicians to provide patients with periodic and high-quality services. However, there are serious deficiencies in various services for mental disorders worldwide. Focusing on China, according to data from the National Health Commission, as of the end of 2021, there were 6.6 million registered patients with severe mental disorders nationwide. In contrast, there are only 64000 psychiatrists in China, accounting for 1.49% of the total number of doctors in the country (4.287 million). There is no doubt that mental illness patients and psychiatrists in China are under tremendous pressure. With the support of relevant policies and the rise of "AI+healthcare", the transformation of clinical research has accelerated, and digital healthcare has entered an innovative stage. In the field of clinical psychology, digital technology has also become an important means to solve the contradiction between the huge patient needs and limited reception capabilities. At the China International Service Trade Fair held in early September 2023, the AI psychological service robot named "Beixiaoliu" officially appeared. It is about 1 meter tall, with a digital screen on its head and wheels on its feet that can be moved. Under the guidance of Lu Lin, an academician of the CAS Member and president of Peking University Sixth Hospital, the "North Primary Six" was developed by Huang Xuebing, director of the clinical psychology center of the hospital, and led by the team. According to Zhang Shuang, a member of the research and development team and psychotherapist of "Beixiaoliu", the research and development of "Beixiaoliu" was launched in 2019, aiming to help people solve psychological problems on their own and prevent their condition from worsening. In October 2022, the "Beixiaoliu" AI psychological service robot was officially put into use. “
