Twenty Years of China's First Manned Space Flight

2023-10-16

On October 15, 2003, the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft was launched from Jiuquan, Gansu, marking China becoming the third country in the world to independently and fully master manned space technology. Today, exactly 20 years later, 18 Chinese astronauts have entered space. However, the breakthroughs made in manned spaceflight far exceed the number of people. In the past 20 years, China's manned spaceflight engineering has driven the rapid development of the aerospace industry and even the overall scientific and technological industry. On September 21, 1992, China's manned space program was officially approved and implemented. Over the past 30 years, the entire engineering line has obtained over 4000 invention patents, and has radiated and driven the rapid development of raw materials, microelectronics, mechanical manufacturing, chemical industry, metallurgy, textiles, communication and other fields. It has cultivated a high-quality talent team and promoted the overall leap of China's aerospace research and testing capabilities. Qian Xuesen once said, "Aerospace is a system engineering, you can't rely on me alone, you have to rely on a lot of people." Among all aerospace engineering, manned space systems are the most complex. At the beginning of the project proposal, there were 7 major systems in the project, and by the space station stage, it had increased to 14 major systems and over a hundred subsystems, involving thousands of participating units and hundreds of thousands of scientific researchers. Taking astronaut search and rescue as an example, in addition to engineering related research and testing units, it also involves multiple departments such as diplomacy and transportation, various war zones, land, sea and air forces, as well as local governments and medical units, with tens of thousands of people participating. The smooth launch of each "Shenzhou" is inseparable from the great cooperation in various regions and fields across the country. Relying on long-term technological accumulation and talent team construction, the manned space industry has witnessed the intensive development of tasks like "making dumplings" for the Chinese people in the past two years. From the launch of Tianhe core module in April 2021 to the return of Shenzhou XIV, China's manned space flight has intensively implemented 11 launches, 3 spacecraft returns, 2 segment transfers, and 7 astronaut exits in 20 months. Twelve astronauts from four flight crews have continued to stay in orbit. The crew of astronauts has completed their rotation in orbit for the first time, breaking through eight key technologies, including long-term astronaut stay in orbit, space station assembly and construction, and regenerative environmental control and life insurance, The space station was built as scheduled, and the entire process was steady and successful. On May 30, 2023, the Shenzhou 16 manned spacecraft was successfully launched. Recently, the China Manned Space Engineering Office also introduced that multiple countries have proposed the need to send astronauts to participate in China's space station missions; We are currently coordinating with relevant parties and actively carrying out preliminary preparations. Behind the 20 years of "accelerated progress" is the solid efforts made by a large group of people, as mentioned by Qian Laobiao. Every major breakthrough in manned spaceflight is a "big battle". The footsteps of the Chinese people in exploring space are accompanied by the drumbeat of the national ensemble, moving forward more firmly and in the long run. (New News Agency)
