An international research team from Sweden, Italy, and Australia has developed a human-machine interface that allows prostheses to be comfortably connected to the wearer's bones through bone integration, while also electrically connected to the nervous system through electrodes implanted in nerves and muscles. For people facing amputation, this new technology has great appeal. Swedish woman Karin is an amputee below the elbow, becoming the first person to accept this highly integrated bionic hand. More than 20 years ago, an accident took away Karin's right arm. Since then, she has endured extremely painful phantom limb pain, while traditional prosthetics are both uncomfortable and unreliable, making them almost ineffective in daily life. In 2020, when she accepted breakthrough biomimetic technology, the "gear of fate began to rotate": for three years, she was able to comfortably wear this powerful prosthetic limb all day, and the high integration between the prosthetic limb and Karin's residual limb relieved her pain. The challenge of amputation below the elbow joint is for the two bones (radius and ulna) to handle the load evenly and evenly, and there is not much space available for implantation and placement of prosthetic components here. However, the research team managed to develop a suitable neuromuscular bone implant that allowed the wearer's nervous system to be connected to the electronic control system of the prosthetic limb. This not only alleviated Karin's pain, but also allowed her to use her own nervous system to control the prosthetic limb. Researchers say a key feature of this new technology is the attachment of prostheses to bones through bone integration. It is through the process of encapsulating titanium with bone tissue that the biomimetic hand forms a solid mechanical connection. The biological integration of titanium implants with bone tissue creates opportunities for amputees to have more natural prostheses and improve their quality of life. By combining bone integration with reconstruction surgery, implanted electrodes, and artificial intelligence, people can restore unexpectedly lost natural functions in an unprecedented way.
