Joint efforts of industry, academia, and research to solve the "shortage of workers" dilemma in the robotics industry

2023-10-12

I want to build a robot! "- This is a sentence blurted out by Huang Xinda, a sophomore student in the primary school department of Guangquan School in Tiexi District, Shenyang, during a visit to an advanced manufacturing expo, facing the robots dancing on the booth with cool postures. This 8-year-old child, who loves to play Rubik's Cube and Lego programming, expressed a strong interest in robots as soon as he first came into contact. Recently, the 21st China International Equipment Manufacturing Expo (hereinafter referred to as the "Manufacturing Expo") and the 2023 China International Digital Economy Expo (hereinafter referred to as the "Digital Expo") were successively held in Shenyang, Liaoning Province and Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. Whether it is the industrial based manufacturing expo or the comprehensive online digital expo, intelligent manufacturing represented by robots has attracted much attention. The robot exhibitions, robot industry forums, and robot innovation and entrepreneurship invitational competitions of the two expos have all attracted the participation of many young people, becoming a high-quality platform for industry, academia, and research to jointly cultivate robot engineers. At the two exhibitions, industrial robots used for cargo loading and unloading and stacking, medical robots assisted laparoscopic surgery, service-oriented robots used for coffee making, and 5G intelligent robots used for chess figuring... Intelligent robot technology was not only applied to the industrial and medical fields, but also appeared in more user-friendly life services, sports events, and other fields, attracting more attention in a way that ordinary audiences could understand and be interested in. In stark contrast to the booming robot market, the robot industry has been plagued by "job shortages" in recent years. In January 2023, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security announced that in the fourth quarter of 2022, there were more than 100 job vacancies nationwide, including positions such as "industrial robot system operator" and "computer network engineering technician". Dong Kai, Director of the Industrial Policy Research Institute of the China Institute of Electronic Information Industry Development, pointed out that the talent gap in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence in China is accelerating and expanding. According to the "Manufacturing Talent Development Planning Guidelines" jointly issued by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the total number of high-end CNC machine tools and robot talents will double from 2015 to 2025, The talent gap will continue to expand to 4.5 million people. In order to bridge the gap between the development of the robotics industry and the shortage of talents, more and more universities in China have established majors related to artificial intelligence and robotics, seeking cross-border integration and collaborative innovation with enterprises and research institutions, and continuously improving the talent cultivation ecology through project-based hands-on practice. Biped humanoid robots can interact with humans through vision, speech, and sensors, making them very suitable for application in the field of education. We also start with robot education in the entire academic stage and promote AI talent cultivation through enterprise research and innovation. "Liang Jia, the head of Leju Artificial Intelligence College from Shenzhen, said at the manufacturing expo. Liang Jia, who is engaged in artificial intelligence education, was once a robot enthusiast. During his studies in computer science at Harbin Institute of Technology, he delved into the development of bipedal humanoid robots. However, only understanding software technologies such as programming is not enough. With the help of the school, Liang Jia and students from different majors jointly established a research and development club to implement the existing software system into a complete bipedal humanoid robot. Through the incubation of innovation and entrepreneurship parks
