Seven Lifestyles Halve the Risk of Depression

2023-09-14

A study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge in the UK, targeting 280000 people, found that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can reduce people's risk of depression by approximately 57%. The relevant paper was published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Mental Health. The research team analyzed data on alcohol and nicotine use, physical activity, diet, sleep, and interpersonal relationships among over 280000 adults in the UK. Participants completed a lifestyle questionnaire between 2006 and 2010, and researchers also reviewed their health records. During the follow-up period of 13 years, 12916 participants were diagnosed with depression. After adjusting for age, gender, body mass index, socio-economic status, and education level, researchers found that seven lifestyles were associated with a lower risk of depression. These measures include moderate alcohol consumption, never smoking, sufficient sleep, regular exercise, healthy diet, frequent socializing, and minimizing prolonged sitting. Subsequently, the researchers classified the participants based on their lifestyle. The results showed that those who developed 5-7 healthy lifestyle habits had an average 57% lower risk of depression compared to those who only had two or less of these habits. Adequate sleep, exercise, and social activities have the greatest impact, each of which is associated with a reduction of approximately 20% in the risk of depression. (New News Agency)
