Quantum computers have the potential to completely change the world, but currently they can only operate at extremely low temperatures, and cooling computers is very expensive. The team at the University of Texas at El Paso in the United States has developed a new type of quantum computing material that can work at room temperature and has 100 times the magnetism of pure iron. It is expected to be used to manufacture quantum computers that can work at room temperature. The relevant papers have been published in the recent Journal of Applied Physics Letters. Research leader Ahmad Eljindi stated that magnets are widely present in devices such as smartphones, cars, and solid-state drives (hardware used to store computer information). In quantum computers, magnets are used to increase computational speed, but their strong magnetism can only be displayed at low temperatures. Therefore, current quantum computers must be at an extremely low temperature of -272.78 ℃ - only slightly higher than absolute zero (-273.15 ℃). To ensure the normal operation of quantum computers, it is necessary to cool the computer and all related materials, which is very expensive. Since 2019, the Elgin team has been committed to creating new magnetic materials to address this issue. The two focuses of the team's attention are being able to work at normal temperatures and being made of non rare earth materials. Eljindi pointed out that currently all magnets are made of rare earth materials, and the reserves of rare earth elements are limited. After several years of trial and error, the team finally developed a new magnetic material. They developed a highly magnetic quantum computing material using aminoferrocene and graphene, which has 100 times the magnetism of pure iron and can work at room temperature. Researchers believe that new materials can be used to manufacture quantum computers at room temperature. Nevertheless, researchers say there is still a lot of work to be done. Firstly, this material is difficult to manufacture, so they are working to optimize the preparation process; In addition, they are also continuing to improve the effectiveness of materials.
