The "Experiment 6" scientific research ship sets sail for the East Indian Ocean

On September 10th, the "Experiment 6" research vessel set sail from the Xinzhou Port Base in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, to carry out the National Natural Science Foundation's 2023 East Indian Ocean Comprehensive Scientific Survey Shared Voyage in the eastern Indian Ocean. This voyage carries 28 scientific research projects from 13 scientific research teams, including the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography) and the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is planned to operate at sea for 80 days, with an estimated voyage of more than 12000 nautical miles. According to Wang Weiqiang, the chief scientist of the voyage and researcher at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography, the Indian Ocean plays an important role in regional and global climate change, water bodies, and energy exchange, especially in carrying a large amount of water vapor through the monsoon, which has a significant impact on southern China and the Yangtze River basin. However, to date, the Indian Ocean is one of the oceans that lacks on-site observation. It is reported that the entire voyage plans to carry out scientific research related to the eastern Indian Ocean, which will solve the major fundamental scientific problem of "the coupling relationship between dynamic processes, material circulation, and biogeography in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean", achieve deep interdisciplinary and integrated research in major scientific problem areas, and deeply explore the different ocean dynamic processes, material transport, and regional climate effects in the northern and southern hemispheres of the tropical eastern Indian Ocean ridge region. It is reported that this voyage is based on multidisciplinary joint observations and aims to obtain a large amount of basic data. The research results will reveal the mechanisms by which dynamic processes in the East Indian Ocean affect biogeochemical cycles, ecosystems, and sedimentary processes, and clarify the sources of nutrients. At the same time, clarify the geographical pattern of regional biodiversity, explain the openness and closure of ecosystems, reveal the response and indicative role of biological communities to physical processes, and understand paleoclimate change. Since 2014, the South China Sea Ocean has been deploying water environment observation submarines in this observation area, and has been operating steadily for 8 consecutive years. It has successfully obtained the interannual variation characteristics of upper ocean circulation dynamics and the basic motion characteristics of near seabed currents. This voyage will deploy an observation system in key observation areas to conduct further systematic and in-depth observations on the flow system in local terrain evolution and its correlation with seafloor sedimentation and geology. "This year marks the tenth anniversary of the 'the Belt and Road' initiative. The South China Sea Institute of Oceanography has actively arranged around the national needs of 'maritime disasters and security along the Maritime Silk Road'. It has carried out surveys in the East Indian Ocean for many consecutive years, supporting the construction of the China Sri Lanka Joint Science and Education Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China Sri Lanka Joint Laboratory for the 'the Belt and Road' Tropical Marine Environment." Lin Qiang, deputy director and project leader of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography, said, I hope to increase scientific research cooperation and exchanges with countries around the Maritime Silk Road through scientific research voyages, and further achieve scientific and educational cooperation.
