Wang Yi Holds a Collective Meeting with the Australian Delegation of the China Australia High Level Dialogue

2023-09-08

On September 7, 2023, Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, collectively met with the Australian delegation at the 7th meeting of the China Australia High Level Dialogue in Beijing. Wang Yi said that China Australia relations have long been at the forefront of China and Western countries. The two countries have highly complementary economies, friendly people, and no historical disputes or major conflicts of practical interests. China maintains continuity and stability in its policies towards Australia, and will continue to adhere to the important positioning of the China Australia comprehensive strategic partnership. Together with Australia, we will promote the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of China Australia relations, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and contribute to regional peace and stability. The high-level dialogue between China and Australia has played a due role in deepening mutual trust, expanding cooperation, and enhancing friendship between the two sides. We hope that both sides can continue to make good use of this platform, enhance mutual understanding and friendly feelings between the two peoples, and make new contributions to the improvement and development of China Australia relations, adding positive energy. Wang Yi stated that last year marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Australia, and this year both sides are standing at a new starting point for another 50 years. Looking back at the past and looking into the future, if we examine bilateral relations over a hundred years, the twists and turns that have occurred in the past few years cannot define the essence of bilateral relations, let alone hinder the pace of cooperation between China and Australia. At the same time, it is necessary for us to draw useful experiences and lessons from it. Firstly, we should treat each other objectively, calmly, and kindly, not interfere in the internal affairs of the other country, enhance understanding through communication, and properly handle differences between each other. Secondly, we must adhere to the principle that China and Australia are partners rather than opponents, and recognize that China's development is an opportunity rather than a threat to Australia. Thirdly, we must independently promote China Australia relations without being influenced or interfered by third parties. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, both sides not only need to reorganize and start again, but also need to unload their burdens and accelerate, reduce unnecessary negative assets, add more positive energy, comprehensively sort out cooperation in various fields, and promote the stable and long-term development of the China Australia comprehensive strategic partnership. The head of the Australian delegation and former Trade Minister Emerson stated that Australia and China have strong economic complementarity, and both sides have broad common interests. Cooperation covers various fields such as economy and trade, service industry, education, humanities, and climate change. I am glad to see that Australia China relations have become increasingly mature after experiencing twists and turns. The Australian side has always regarded China as an important partner and is willing to engage in constructive and candid dialogue with China, understand each other, manage differences, and develop long-term and stable Australia China relations. Both sides should also revitalize cooperation in multilateral institutions, jointly promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and work together for the well-being of both countries and the world. Wang Yi stated that both China and Australia are supporters and promoters of the multilateral trading system. We are willing to work with all parties, including Australia, to jointly build the Asia Pacific Community and promote globalization towards inclusive, open, and win-win development.
